Mrs. H. F. Narey of Spirit Lake started Christmas card preparations months ahead. Her unique verses and hand-painted pictures drew wide attention, and her cards are sold in selected gift shops nationwide, bearing her signature Esther Bergman Narey.
Nearly 200 crippled Iowa youngsters will be aided by a state fund of 13 000 dollars. The legislature allotted 10 000 dollars and last week a legislative interim committee added 3 000 dollars for children affected by infantile paralysis and other disabilities.
Des Moines police search for Floyd Lomax 21 a farmer from Menlo who sought his new wife two days after their wedding. He traveled to Des Moines hours apart from her, and she has not been seen at a friend’s home as planned.
Harold Franks aged 15 in Cedar Rapids was reported improved after swallowing a large needle three weeks ago while sewing overalls. He told no one until he fainted with cousin John Kemery and was taken to hospital. X ray failed to reveal the needle in his abdomen.
Waterloo officials announced a new fireproof exhibition building to replace the 1937 hall destroyed by fire. E S Estes manager said the steel and concrete structure will be built on the Dairy Cattle congress grounds before the 1938 show and used for commercial and industrial exhibits.
Centerville reports five tularemia cases or rabbit fever in town. Mrs El mer Proffit and her eight year old son contracted the disease while dressing a rabbit, along with three nearby family members. Dr F J Condon and local physicians prepare serum for treatment as ten cases have appeared in two years in the Chariton basin health district.
Acting Motor Vehicle Commissioner Horace Tate said reports of a ban on Model T Fords on Iowa highways after January 1 are unfounded. He explained the new law requires vehicles unable to travel at 20 mph on 3 percent grade to be operable, but does not ban Model T Fords.
About 200 birds are entered for the fourth annual Washington County poultry show at City Hall. The event runs from tomorrow through Saturday evening with entries continuing to arrive and unplaced birds possible. Secretary Fred Downing notes growing interest and expects exhibitors from outside the county to attend.
Nelson G Briels 78 died yesterday at his sister Mrs A L Simperon home three miles west of Kalona after a heart attack. Funeral set for 2 PM Wednesday at the Simpson home with Rev C E Hillis in charge. Burial in Snider cemetery. Born Oct 12 1859 in Mercer County Illinois he lived with his sister 87 years. Survived by sister Mrs Simpson and brother George Ottumwa. Arthur Atack Jr Cornell college Mount Vernon visited his parents Dr and Mrs Arthur Atack yesterday.
Donald Marek a Washington 4 H club boy and regular county farm club winner earns a scholarship to any university of his choice at the International Livestock Show in Chicago for outstanding work in livestock club activities. Another Iowa boy Russell Holt of Ripley also receives a similar award.
A morning fire at the Harry C. Ward residence at 305 East Polk Street damaged part of the attic and roof with heavy water and smoke impact. Mrs. Ward reported the fire started in the attic, and occupants moved downstairs belongings to safety while fire crews lingered on scene into the afternoon.
President Roosevelt asks Congress to reduce highway funding citing nearly 1.5 billion spent in five years. He proposes canceling 216 million for 1939 and setting 100 million for road construction in 1939, 125 million for 1940, with action needed before year end as 214 million must be apportioned January 3. Since 1916 the federal road program has surpassed three billion dollars.
Ottumwa council votes 2 to 1 against a proposal to limit and restrict the number of filling stations in the city. Operators and lessees have pressed for a restrictive ordinance for some time.
Charles B. Morgan of Rubio died at 12 30 am at his son C Earl Morgan s home near Rubio after a four year illness following a severe stroke He was born March 22 1851 in Glasgow Scotland and spent many years as a miner and farmer He is survived by five children including C Earl Morgan Orville Morgan and two daughters and one son with a granddaughter in Washington state Funeral services will be held Thursday at the Friends church in Rubio with burial in the Friends cemetery in Richland He was a member of the Friends church and had retired in June 1933 due to ill health

A large central Christmas tree with colored lights cascades radiating strands and a white beacon atop. Twelve illuminated star posts border the park edge and greenery festoons connect the light poles. Small trees in front of shops add to the festive scene with more features to be added.
Welfare director Miss Helen Creswell announced that unemployed youths aged 17 to 23 may bid to enroll in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Enrollment begins after January 1, with placements likely at the Fairfield CCC camp. 13 from the county were sent there in October.

A vetiirement was reached this morning in the case of Sadie Banes of Sigourney against Glen Martin of Washington. Trial began yesterday with two plaintiff witnesses. Mrs Banes claimed damages for injuries when her car was struck by Martins truck on a Sigourney street last December. Judge Frank Bechly excused petit jurors for the term with recall possible if needed.
A truck sliding on a sleet slick bridge became suspended by chained logs catching the structure. Driver Platt Hicks and Bobby Hotle leaped to the creek bank from the cab roof as deputies and workers with tractors and a wrecker freed the vehicle without serious damage.
Washington police arrested a youth, claimed various names George Groves or Terry McWrite, in a 1936 Oldsmobile reportedly stolen from Davenport. He rode with a man to a freight train stop, sought credit for tire service, and was jailed awaiting Davenport police.
The Camera club will meet Wednesday evening at the YMCA to hear John A. Strensten, an Iowa City photographer who spent last year at the photo school of the art center in Los Angeles. He will speak on enlarging. Everyone is invited.
Japanese naval officers seized several foreign vessels anchored near the international settlement in Shanghai, tearing down the American flag on one launch owned by the Chinese Foreign Steamship Co. Consul General Davis protested after the flag was replaced with the Japanese emblem. Two Italian-flagged ships were also seized prompting protests from Rome.
