Paris reports the new government moving to mobilize about 80,000 men from the 1946 class and recalling 40,900 from the 1947 class as a nationwide strike of 2,000,000 workers fuels violence. Cabinet pleads for public order while authorities clear strikebound stations and factories.
A November 28 fire at the Ottumwa country club destroyed the main buildings after smoke from a stove in the men's locker room spread through the floor. The golf shop and dance hall survived, but losses were pegged at about 75 thousand dollars, including members personal effects.
In Ketchikan Alaska rescue teams search for 45 missing crewmen as four survivors recover from shock aboard the Wachusett cutter. Four bodies from the 53 crew have been recovered with low hopes for further survivors. ship struck Hippo Island on Monday night. Capt Neils Tiaugen leads efforts.

The drive for the Community Chest pushed funds toward the goal today with donations closing in on 21 thousand dollars. Organizers reported heat from the campaign and expect the total to top twenty one thousand before nightfall.
United Press reports Iowa's 1947 traffic deaths reached 487 after a Perry car train crash killed Lois Gartner 16 and Clyde Duncan 18. A young couple rode with them as a Minneapolis St. Louis gas main vehicle collided. The national total nears 100 as safety officials forecast a lighter overall holiday death toll.

Simple burial services for Capt Robert H Shannon will be held at Elin Grove cemetery Sunday at three o'clock conducted by Dr Fred E Miller of the Methodist church. The body arrives from Chicago early Saturday morning with Captain McKay as military escort. Arrangements are by L A Jones funeral home. Shannon was born February 12 1916 in Washington and died May 3 1945 in Iceland after a bomber crash while serving in the Army Air Force. He had training in Washington and Iowa State University and earlier assignments in North Africa and England. He is survived by parents a brother and a sister and a grandmother.
The Iowa state conservation commission announces the inland fishing season and the squirrel season will close on November 3. The fishing season, described as excellent to fair, ends at midnight Sunday amid earlier poor stream fishing due to floods. Charles Wielff and Charley Horak share corn duties, while Linda Kay Meitzman’s funeral prompts a Lone Tree gathering for the Heilamaen family. Hazel Lambert recovers from recent surgery in Omaha at Lloyd Brown’s home.
Des Moines reports subzero conditions with Decorah at seven below zero the first subzero reading of the season. Other lows include Mason City one above Waterloo six Charles City five and Spencer Dubuque Iowa City nine. The state faces continued cold with highs near 25 to 30 and light snow possible tonight.
