Loran Robertson, longtime radio operator and fire truck driver for the city, has resigned effective December 6 after 20 years in his current post and an earlier eight-year city service period. He plans to expand a home shop business selling and servicing fire extinguishers.
The Washington County Board of Supervisors awarded a 20352 dollar contract to St. Regis Paper Co.-Wheeler Division of West Des Moines for two rail cars of bridge planks. The firm was the sole bidder for the job to supply lumber for county bridge repairs. Fire gutted Harms Hotel in Rock Island, no injuries reported, cause undetermined.
Margaretta Happy Rockefeller, diagnosed with cancer, had surgery to remove her right breast at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital five weeks after a radical mastectomy of the left breast. The procedure began shortly before 8:30 a.m. as her husband was nearby.

Ford and Soviet leader Brezhnev announce a ten year cap on strategic forces from Vladivostok. Details remain to be negotiated while Kissinger calls it a breakthrough and Ford plans to brief Congress next week ahead of formal signing possible during Brezhnev’s U.S. visit.
Negotiators from the Bituminous Coal Operators Association and United Mine Workers of America reach an improved tentative pact after three hours of talks. About 120,000 miners have been on strike since November 12 and ratification by rank‑and‑file miners could take around 10 days.
The Human Development Fund of the Iowa Conference of United Methodist Churches donated 1000 to the Washington County Developmental Center. Dr J Roland Crandall presented the gift noting local church gifts are returning home. The center plans to move a garage from Prairie Flower School site to East Third Street to store materials for contract work.
County Attorney Tracy Anderson announced plans for a grand jury probe into the death of 28 year old Michael Mondia of Washington after a car pedestrian incident near Jack Hamiltons Clubhouse. Eyewitnesses say Mondia was dragged by a reversing car driven by Shirley Cox as a party unfolded at a nearby mobile home. Mondia died from injuries after transfer to University Hospitals Iowa City. An autopsy is pending. Anderson will review autopsy results and witness statements before concluding.
The sheriff's office announced that drug possession charges against Cynthia Lynn Henderson 20 of Washington were dropped. Douglas Henderson her brother is being sought by military authorities in connection with a September 20 1974 postal shipment of marijuana sent from Germany. She did not open the package and had no knowledge of its contents while the sender was her brother who served with the Armed Forces in Germany. The military search for Douglas Henderson continues.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger brought his wife Nancy and children to Beijing for talks with Premier Chou En Lai and Foreign Minister Chiao Kuanhua. A formal dinner at the Peking People's Palace featured toasts on three years of Sino American thaw and Kissinger's assertion that policy is fixed, not expediency, as Ford continues Nixon’s legacy. He spoke after a Vladivostok summit with Brezhnev and noted Chou’s hospital visit as a sign of personal diplomacy.
Detroit report cites a 40 percent drop in new car sales in mid November triggering extensive layoffs for more than 200,000 workers and the shutdown of about half of North America's auto assembly plants before Christmas. About 85,000 may not return after holidays. Analysts link the Nov 11 20 sales data to frequent auto industry layoffs.
The prosecution rested its case in the Watergate coverup trial. Judge Sirica hinted he may dismiss counts accusing Mitchell and Ehrlichman of lying to the FBI, saying he would not convict on those charges if he were on the jury and that the evidence was not satisfactory.
UPI reports in Davenport that William and Mary Thurwanger, owners of the B & M Gun Club and Thurwanger's Shooting Supplies, are charged in a U S District Court suit with oppressive child labor and violations of minimum wage and overtime laws. The action alleges 13 minors under 18 and 39 under 16 employed in hazardous work, plus inadequate wage records.
