Rebels opened fire in Lumumba Square killing at least 50 hostages as Belgian paratroops and American planes mounted a daring rescue. Dr. Paul Carlson, a U.S. missionary, was among the dead. About 100 hostages were flown to Leopoldville, with 20 wounded in the first leg. Survivors described mass shootings and rapes during the attack.

Tragic TWA Jet Crash At Rome Airport Kills 45
The Trans World Airlines plane crashed on takeoff at Rome Fiumicino Airport, killing 45 people including U.S. victims and Cardinal Daly. Edouard Lesniak, a crewmember, died of injuries later in hospital as the jet struck a steamroller after engine trouble and a fuel fire erupted along the runway.

Rex Schrader former Jones County Attorney 33 was sentenced to six months in prison for failing to file federal income tax returns in 1960 and 1961 Judge Roy L Stephenson ordered two concurrent six month terms The government said he did not file returns 1957 to 1962 and he reportedly owes about 4500 in back taxes Schrader served as county attorney from 1959 to 1964 and pleaded no defense to the two counts
