A Milford High School survey finds only 16 percent of 67 left handed students above average grades. Superintendent C. Burkins orders left handed tablet arm chairs to improve penmanship, noting left handed pupils are worst in penmanship.
J W James of Council Bluffs was fined 500 dollars after biting Patrolman Robert Edwards thumb. The injury was severe with infection threatening Edwards life.
Logan city council discusses purchasing a building for a community hall and 23 acres including a rock quarry at about $5000. If negotiations succeed, a binding election on the proposal will be scheduled.
Mason City report: Pete Peterson, a junk yard employee, is hospitalized at Park hospital after his car left a road five miles west of the city. Walter Strand, his passenger, is jailed on an intoxication charge.
Hancock County Auditor Fred C. Missal says livestock losses from roaming dogs are among the heaviest in years. Paul Stromer of Goodell reports his herd: 19 sheep killed one night and 15 additional ones killed the following night.
Sumner seeks a writ in Brewer county district court to force Central States Power & Light to remove poles wires and equipment from Sumner streets and alleys. The action comes after voters rejected renewing the utility’s franchise and approved bonds for a new municipal power plant.
Des Moines and Iowa overall place seventeenth among 48 states in a DOJ crime rating covering the first nine months of 1996. The study compared crimes per 100 persons with violence and property crimes nearly equal in frequency across towns.Seventeen states had better crime records than Iowa for the period.

W B Hasbrooke 55 of Le Mars died after a fall down basement stairs crushing his head. He was en route to California with his wife and planned a Thanksgiving party before leaving. The accident happened in southwest Plymouth County where he was visiting his daughter Mrs C W Knapp.
Dr Earl B Harper world traveler and president of Simpson College opened the third annual Cornell forum in Mount Vernon urging awareness of foreign propaganda. He warned that tyranny overshadows democracy and warned against revolutions prompted by distorted political and economic life.
The Supreme Court in a 4 to 4 decision affirms the New York Court of Appeals ruling that the state unemployment insurance act is constitutional. No opinion was written, and one justice was absent due to illness, leaving the court without a clear majority. The historic tie preserves the New York ruling.
Mrs Anna Jordon Humble widow of G M Humble died at 12 30 this morning after years of illness. Funeral set for Tuesday 10 30 at L A Jones funeral home with Dr Arthur Atack of the Methodist church. burial in Brighton cemetery. Born Brighton November 1 1859 she married November 23 1881 to G M Humble. Surviving children are Ralph Humble Keokuk Boyd Neil Harry Grant and Mrs Don Young of Washington. One daughter Mrs Gilbert Gof is deceased.
Wayland's last surviving Civil War veteran W A Schaeffer died at his home after a brief illness. He sold his harness shop to Alfred Pedro and would have turned 89 next January. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church, with burial at Fairfield. He is survived by two sisters in Los Angeles and Richland.
Telegram announces death of Mrs. L D Young wife of Dr L D Young at Dallas Texas. Funeral held in Dallas church led by Dr Young with burial planned in Charleston Indiana. Native of Charleston she had long suffered illness. The Youngs lived in Washington and Lincoln Nebraska before Dallas where Dr Young became a noted southern preacher. Many friends express sympathy.
Judge P J Stegers oversaw motions in Wood versus Moore an automobile accident damage case with a special appearance overrulled and the defendant given until December 4 to plead. Also scheduled were Statler versus Gretter and a hearing in Equitable Life versus Shoup et al.
The funeral of Mrs Nancy Jane Burham who died Sunday will be held at two o clock Tuesday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home. Dr Arthur Atack will officiate. She was born November 1861 in Marion county Indiana, daughter of Preston and Mary Davis Smither, and came to the area.
The Spanish government accuses Italy and Germany of involvement in a submarine attack on a loyalist squadron at Carteenna. Germany and Italy deny ownership but agree to discuss the matter. Britain strengthens naval forces off the Spanish coast and warns against interference with shipping while rebels remain unrecognized.
Word of the death of Charles Noecker at Decatur Illinois a former resident here was received by his cousin Mrs Mary Genkinger Mr Noecker dropped dead about six o clock Saturday afternoon at Decatur with Masonic ritual and burial was at Decatur cemetery He was born April five eighteen fifty seven nine miles north of Washington son of Daniel and Jane Noecker He farmed in this community then went to California for eight years returning to farm one of his father's farms He married Effie Kinkaig of Washington in nineteen nineteen they moved to Decatur six years ago Mrs Noecker died the spring after their move and Mr Noecker lived with his brother in law in Decatur.
Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera Pinafore to be staged at the high school auditorium tomorrow evening. Miss Helen Coffey directs music and Miss Opal Keeney leads drama. Prominent roles include Dixie Carter David Pears on Claire Darbyshire Tom Gray and others. A chorus of about thirty sailors and relatives will perform throughout the show.
Elected township officers are named for Washington County from the general election. The list covers justices of the peace, constables, trustees, clerks and assessors across Brighton Cedar Crawford Dutch Creek English River Franklin Highland Iowa Jackson Lime Creek Marion Oregon Seventy six and Washington City townships, with several names including Rev. R. W Fillmore Charles Hoover and many others. Shoppers in town Saturday included Mrs Harold Kauffman and Jean Marie Wayland among others.
Four girls were taken to Washington county hospital after a car wreck on Primary road No 8 between Ainsworth and No 161. Two were released, Nina Morgan and Daisy Painter remain hospitalized with non fatal injuries while Laird Hawkins Woodrow Coon and Eugene Lockett escaped with minor injuries. Sheriff investigation underway.
Moscow November 23 The Soviet government weighed executive clemency today in the case of B. I. who faced execution. Authorities considered mercy as final steps in the death sentence process amid ongoing deliberations.
In Juneau Alaska a massive rock and debris slide from Mt Roberts killed at least 32 people and trapped residents in collapsed buildings. Rescue crews worked through sleet to free survivors and recover bodies, with one woman rescued and many still missing overnight.
Mrs. John Quinn dies at Riverside after a nine o clock morning service at St Marys. Born Grace Boyd August 1860 in Chillicothe Ohio she lived in Washington County most of her life and married John Quinn in St James church. Surviving children include Alice Lucky Davenport Henry Green Joe Quinn and others with several siblings listed. Funeral plans are by L A Jones of Washington.
Reports say Strejkling, a German engineer, was executed at Novoshhrak for sabotage. The incident arose as Germany considered severing diplomatic ties with Russia amid the punishment.
