Des Moines reports Iowa state entomologist Dr. Carl J. Dreke says the chinch bug population is four to five times higher than at this time last year and that plans to seek a $1,000,000 federal fund to combat the pest may need raising to $1,500,900.
Iowa City features Cherie McElhin ner of Washington as chair of the Spinster's Annual Spree to be staged this evening in Memorial Union. The university's bachelors will be paraded with the three most eligible presented amid sorority activities.

Thieves smashed the door glass of an automobile owned by HU Summer and stole a suitcase and a case both filled with religious tracts and Bibles. They also took a box containing women’s and children’s clothing. The loss totaled 285 dollars.

About 150 are expected at the banquet to close the corn show chaired by County Agent W J Roudabush.

His name had circulated as a possible appointee as term of Postmaster Harry McCall ends in December. The county Democratic central committee plans to meet to consider recommendations for Congressman Re C Bieber and may appoint a temporary postmaster in Washington with later exams for the four year term.
County Agent W. F. Rouda bush invites all township residents to a weekly Farm Bureau chorus rehearsal at his home Saturday evening. The chorus will sing at the annual Farm Bureau meeting set for Saturday December and invited groups enjoy singing to participate.
Work started today on the quarry at the Mulley farm south of town organized by the city as an emergency relief project. Henry Vollmer said 26 Washington men were assigned with ten used daily to crush rock for surfacing city streets. Fred Werner, city street commissioner, leads the crew. Farmers from Washington and Marion townships strip earth above the rock, a task funded in part by government soy bean supplies from last summer.
An old black horse, now deceased, caused damage to two Smith cars and injuries to four Smiths in two crashes about 10:30 p.m. two miles east of town. Mrs. Merle Smith and baby were injured. Rex Smith also bruised. The horse was removed after sheriff arrived. ownership could not be established. Thanksgiving service planned at Baptist church with Dr. F C Witzigman preaching. Rev Wiley Mayve Henk ey and Br H Willey and family moved from Left to 818 North Sixth Avenue Washington where Willey, longtime minister in the Disciples church, retires from ministry. Pastor Vernon H Carter confirms the move and provides details to the Journal.
A grand jury indicted Policeman Charlie Smith and special deputy Robert Calvert on seven counts of murder for the Onteta Pass Chiquola Manufacturing Plant killings during the September 6 textile strike. Eight other officers and deputies were not indicted.
At Ann Arbor a car carrying two doctors Dr. Robert B. Meyer assistant dermatologist and Dr. George R King assistant neurologist and nurse Violet Swanson left the road and struck a bridge. Interne Dr. Fred Gelp and nurses Gertude Schuller Virginia Coljing and Elma Olinghouse were injured.
In Omaha on November 23 a dust explosion at the Cargill elevator, the largest in the region, killed two men and caused $10,000,000 in damage. The blast injured several others and prompted a major emergency response.
Reserved seats for the Washington high school operetta go on sale tomorrow morning at Phillips and Hebner's drug store. The performance will be in the high school auditorium next Tuesday evening at o o'clock, November 27. The operetta Lelawata has music by Cadman, with Miss Helen Coffey greeting attendees. Activity tickets admit students and are not reservable uptown. reservations will be at the door on the night of the operetta.
Sam B. Patton of Boulder Colorado arrived this morning to spend winter with his mother Mrs. J. W. Patton and his sisters Misses Della and Ticia Patton. He notes a prior trip where someone borrowed his suitcase.
