The city of Washington proposes a contract with surrounding townships to provide fire protection to residents. The tabulation lists the number of buildings and the dollar valuations of protected properties for Washington Cedar Franklin Marion and Jackson townships in the proposed coverage area.
A three day blizzard across the Plains and upper Midwest killed eight people, with Minnesota losing five to exposure or heart attack and Nebraska and Colorado each reporting deaths. Drift heights reached 15 feet in South Dakota and 18-20 inches of snow fell in parts of Nebraska and Wisconsin, as power outages and stranded residents prompted widespread efforts.
Juan Carlos de Borbon was sworn as Spain’s first king in 44 years, succeeding Franco. Crowds cheered in Madrid as he took the oath before the Cortes, wearing commander-in-chief regalia. A military band played the national anthem and leaders applauded during the address.
Police say an estimated 1 million to 1.8 million dollars in jewels were stolen from a Park Avenue duplex. Thomas Kempner reported the burglary at 8 p.m. and Nan Kempner noted most good pieces were taken in a prior break two years ago. A houseguest’s jewelry also vanished, with no disturbance beyond the drawer.
United Press International reports Fairfield welcomes Maharishi International University 180 acres on the edge of town. MIU draws about 600 students with 72 buildings on site. Residents praise the calm, cite few problems and note some minor student issues.
In Albany, New York City Democrats vote 23 to 14 to send a home rule message urging a $205 million tax package. The plan, feared as Ford taxes by critics, would raise income taxes and several nuisance levies to avert fiscal collapse and seek a federal bailout. The state legislature prepared to act as council members debated the package.
Two vehicles damaged in a morning crash at Fourth Avenue and East Main Street. Ronald G. Hughes and Sally Kay Davidson, both from Washington, sustained minor injuries and were treated at Washington County Hospital, where they were released. A small car fire was quickly extinguished.
Phillip J. Lemke of Washington erects a 12½ foot diameter, nine and a half foot high cone shaped tipi after months of work and about 110 dollars. He notes it is a portable, livable structure designed for warm air flow and wind resistance, reflecting a lifelong fascination with American Indian history and culture.
