Alfred Boss of Coggen Iowa was warned by his wife to beware strangers. After selling his car of hogs in Chicago Boss met a friendly stranger who invited him to tour the town. Boss called the detective bureau while away and the man is jailed as a "man wanted" and described as a confirmed confidence man.
DES MOINES. State tax board officials said they can police only a fraction of the more than 6 000 applicants for income tax jobs. Most placements will follow after applicants pass rigid examinations as the new tax division begins operations.
Final plans for financing a viaduct over the Des Moines river and railroad tracks in Ottumwa were completed after a conference between city officials and the Iowa highway commission. The commission will advance up to $75,000 of the viaduct cost. Project costs range from $315,000 to $375,000 for a single span.
The Des Moines city council revoked El Capitan cafe beer permit at S S W Ninth Street and Caulder Avenue effective immediately after a hearing where high school youths testified to beer purchases.

Destruction of the Congregational church at Polk City near Des Moines by a fire caused about noon today. The blaze destroyed the building valued at about $10,000 with damage concentrated in the main sanctuary and surrounding rooms. No injuries reported. Firefighters battle flames from early afternoon until under control.

Russell Williams of Crawfordsville won the sweepstakes prize at the county corn show this afternoon with Carl Oldfield of Wellman as reserve champion. Prof. M. A. Hauser praised the surprisingly fine quality of the corn amid drought and pests. Washington county farmers produced a wetter corn exhibit larger than last year’s and 192 entries were listed, up from 149 in 1988.

In Le Mars Granville residents Mrs. William Englebrecht 44 and Felix Langenhorst 44 died when their car hit a bridge railing near Merrill Hazel Engelbrecht 22 is listed in critical condition. Langenhorst 42 was driver and John Ravenhorst Holiday Minnesota drove a truck. In Ottumwa Richard Lee 49 died after walking into a car driven by Jenness Hope. William Tressel 63 of Galesburg Ill was killed in Burlington yard by a train.
Charles Wildering a 19 year old CCC camp member died in an Omaha hospital today from injuries after his car overturned on a gravel road four miles from Harlan Iowa.
