During October, 53 796 families or about 215 000 people received relief through the Iowa state emergency relief administration. H Muloeck said today. Nine thousand three hundred one applications were received in the month across 99 counties. Cases opened totaled 7 456, with 4 224 of those being old cases reopened.
John Loftus of Gilmore City and Emerson Cahill of Vincent were involved in a collision that seriously injured Mrs. Earl Goodman. Loftus and Cahill were detained awaiting hearings on charges of driving while intoxicated.
Clarence Paustian a Scott county farmer near Walcott has devised a method to shred and bale cornstalks in a single operation. His corn shredder feeds chopped stalks into a hopper then into a baler eliminating much handling and attracting local attention.
Weather notes from Des Moines say warm spring conditions here come from a high pressure "dam" shielding us from cold. The piece suggests much of Iowa weather is manufactured in Alaska, with cold air drifting southward only when the dam breaks or leaks.

Mary Del Rose Martin ten months old, daughter of Mr and Mrs Chris Martin, died in Dubuque Sunday night at the home of her grandparents. Police say the infant rolled from bed and wedged between the bed and wall, resulting in death.
George Pfaff told Judge Blanchard he did not remember what happened. Ray Lambert, who arrested Pfaff, described finding him on the main line track with his head between rails and feet over the other as roughly eight trains pass hourly.
Des Moines state officials C. W. Storms Leo J. Wegman and Fred Porter travel to Atlanta Georgia for the annual convention of the National Association of Auditors Treasurers and Comptrollers. The trio represents Iowa in the event.
Mrs. Bruce Orr, 46, of Garner was killed when a shotgun her husband was polishing discharged. Orr said he did not know the gun was loaded. he lost a finger to the blast and was hospitalized in Mason City.
Police fear William Weiss abducted October 26 has been slain by underworld men after a ransom of 100000 was paid but no word from Weiss. He was reportedly threatened with death in notes to his family.
Miss Mildred Haber has returned to Muscatine after spending several weeks in Washington.
The Ainsworth community was shocked by the sudden death of Mrs M R Gardner 45 after a heart condition ended a brief illness. Funeral services are set for Wednesday at 2 pm at L A Jones Funeral Home with Rev Fred Sharpe and Rev F J Shook officiating. She leaves her husband and two young children Mary Floise eight and Stella Belle three. three Gardner children died earlier in January 1925 from scarlet fever.
The Washington county Masonic association holds its monthly meeting in Washington this evening. Members from Wellman Kalona Riverside Ainsworth Crawfordsville and Brighton are expected, while a social program precedes a brief talk by an as yet unconfirmed speaker and advance ticket sales begin today at 40 cents.
At noon today the Washington YMCA reported $2,716 raised toward its annual budget with many large gifts expected. About half the interviews had occurred, and the drive continued briskly. Factory workers at American Pearl Button Co. showed strong early support with 40 joining, up from 39 last year, funded jointly by workers and owners.

A calf club show featured four notable calves shown by Everette Hayes Bol Eekles Merle Warner Bill Walker Lloyd Marek John Combes and Claire Darbyshire.
New York reports a student strike at City College protests over the expulsion of 21 students. Police were driven from the campus as demonstrators clashed with authorities.

A Chamber of Commerce bulletin shows Washington county collected 17,109,509 dollars in sales tax for the first quarter, with a per capita of 263 percent. Jefferson, Henry, and Keokuk counties posted lower totals and per capita figures, while the statewide total reached 2,623,398.23 dollars.

Mr and Mrs Cloyd Knupp from northwest of Washington arrive in Washington this afternoon and note Iowa remains partly muddy as travel continues.
Two young bandits robbed a tavern near Phillips Wisconsin escaped in a wrecked car by ramming William Toban a Soo Line foreman while fleeing The Toban home occupants rushed out and fled as the gunmen fled in a stolen car after Toban was shot through the lung in the farmyard incident
Sheriff H M Putnam reports James McDonald, alias and several names, sentenced in Sing Sing to two and a half to five years for attempted grand larceny. He and James Kellogg were linked to confidence schemes and faced swindle charges in multiple states.
Otto Derek, 23, confessed to involvement in an $80,000 Amalgamated Trust Savings Bank heist. Authorities arrested two accomplices, Joseph Riata and A. Karata, after Derek disclosed a syndicate tied to Century Progress and a Springfield insurance firm financing heavy loans.
The old age assistance mission for Washington eo will hold an examination day on November 23 at the court house in Washington for the purpose of qualifying investigators for old age pension work. Those interested may obtain particulars from members of the assistance board. A similar examination will be held at Mt. Pleasant on Thursday November 22.
