Baker O E Baker Jr and T J Coulter of Ottumwa were fined 300 dollars plus costs in municipal court after being found guilty of possessing ten pheasants. They were arrested October 29 and released on small bonds but failed to appear, leading to increased bonds and bench warrants for arrest.
Fire caused about 60000 in damage to the Independent Meat and Grocery Co Schroeder Drug Store and Leytze Furniture Co in Independence before it was controlled. Dr W Rosier a tired dentist who lived above the grocery discovered the blaze in the two story building housing the grocery.
Mr and Mrs Henry Webert of La Vporre announce a thankful reunion as all seven sons return home for Thanksgiving. The veterans include Private Mail, Motor Maphiniat's Mate Third Class Robert, 1/5 Ray, Corporal Virgil, 7/5 Merle, Sergeant Donald and Pic Alva.
Influenza spread kept students home in Des Moines area towns while Grand Junction public school in Greene county reopened Monday after a student absences peaked. Superintendent Alfred Ogland returned to work after illness, along with one teacher.
John McNulty and Herman Rhode found an old art pickle bottle half filled with money while digging for a dead cat in Dexter. The worn bills are unreadable and will be sent to the Dallas County State Bank for valuation and possible forwarding to the Federal Reserve if needed. Neighbors recall the yard once belonged to the late George Cook and say his sons searched there after his death.
Cedar Rapids jurist James Harrison twenty two pleaded guilty to issuing a worthless check for twenty five dollars and received a term at the state reformatory for not more than seven years. He had been returned from Waterloo and had four prior divorces and engagements with a Waterloo fiancée.
Glen Long of Washington received a ten day sentence in the county jail for intoxication and disturbing the peace. The sentence was imposed by Jos e of the Peace J. F. Boevee.

The 29th annual Christmas seal sale begins this Thanksgiving to educate about tuberculosis as a curable disease. The campaign is run by the Parent-Teacher association in Washington and county and town school superintendents, with about 67 percent of funds staying locally.

Walter Rauch, 42, of Victor Iowa, was killed when he fell from a moving truck near Guernsey while adjusting loose chicken feeders. He suffered a broken neck and fractured skull. Driver Al Fontinelle of the Vinton Produce Co. said Rauch went missing after arriving in Victor.

Maj. Gen. Fhiteru Jonjo a top Japanese war lord, killed himself with a dagger in his office within a day of arrest as a war criminal. Miyano said Jonjo performed an excellent hara-kiri after arriving at the former army staff college where he oversaw relief work for mobilized soldiers.
Reports to the sheriff describe local and rural youths firing rifles and slingshots, damaging property including illuminating devices and a farmer's hog. Admiral J A Richardson testified before the Pearl Harbor investigation committees that Admiral Stark agreed with his view against basing the fleet at Pearl Harbor in 1940 but President Roosevelt overrode them. He said Hull supported keeping the fleet at Pearl Harbor and that Roosevelt rejected pleas for more personnel. He cited Hornbeck as influential and recounted talks in 1940 about basing the fleet at Pearl Harbor and keeping it in Hawaii to deter Japan.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek pressed for Moscow’s aid to restore soviet-occupied Manchuria to Beijing. Takungpao reports Chiang and Chinese ambassadors met Soviet officials in Moscow and Chunking, signaling satisfaction with talks despite Moscow’s alleged passive intervention. Chiang’s son Chiang Chin-kao and others fled Manchuria and are said to be returning soon.
