First Regiment officers of the Iowa state guard from southern Iowa gathered at Hotel Tort in Des Moines for a plans and training conference. About 75 officers including the state staff outlined enlistment, training, drill attendants and administration. Gov. Blue praised the guard’s value, citing proven readiness during emergencies.
A Sunday night blaze damaged a two story building housing the Independence Meat & Grocery Co and offices and apartments. Damage estimated at $40000. Dr W Roshier, the only occupant, escaped unharmed as three fire companies fought the fire begun by unknown origin. Floyd Fox, the night policeman, sounded the alarm.
Five members of a family were hospitalized after a Saturday auto truck crash one and a half miles west of Otley on Ta fon Highway 163. Ruth Klaarmes, 16, was the most seriously injured, unconscious since the wreck. Also hurt were A. M. Klaamer, 46, his wife, 45, and two daughters Fat, 12, and Doris, 5. The truck was driven by Loren Shippers of Oskaloosa and owned by Glen Currier, also of Oskaloosa. Shippers was uninjured.

Oritest Sapp, 44, a former Cincinnati resident, died in a west Centerville two vehicle crash early Sunday. Mrs. Jack Morris of Centerville, in serious condition with two fractured legs an arm and head injuries. Kendall of Centerville also hospitalized with severe injuries.
Trials will start at 10:00 p.m. Tuesday in Lueneburg Germany after last minute talks among representatives of the United States Great Britain and Russia. The proceedings will involve Nazi war criminals and mark a coordinated Allied effort to address war crimes.

Maude Bigham Murphy aged 62 died Sunday at 11 45 at her home west of Crawfordsville after a period of illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 30 Tuesday at the Crawfordsville United Presbyterian Church, burial in Crawfordsville cemetery. Survived by two sisters Mrs Robert Wells and Mrs John Wagner. sister Mrs J S Roth and brother Homer Murphy are deceased. Funeral arrangements are with L A Jones funeral home.
Rev. Dwight D. Smith of Rangoon Burma will address the Baptist church Wednesday evening at eight. Born in Cedar Rapids Nebraska he studied at the University of Redlands and UC Berkeley before teaching physics at Judson College Burma since 1925. He aided in rescue work during the war years.
The Pearl Harbor investigation revealed Japanese forces had a Dec. 2 turn back contingency if diplomacy yielded satisfactory results. Rear Admiral English testified that general battle instructions included the plan, and a Dec. 5 wireless order directed the attack at dawn on December 7.
Ernest Rock, 73, longtime resident of Columbus Junction, died at his home after a short illness. Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. at Richie funeral home, burial in Columbus City cemetery. He was born near New London, Iowa on November 15, 1872, married Etta Drake February 14, 1896, and worked at a seed and fuel store before serving as substitute city mail carrier after their son William A. Rock died in 1933. Surviving are his wife, two sons Robert and Warren, a Davenport sister Etta Mumper, and four step brothers Eugene William Joe and FF A Lewis, all of Columbus Junction.
Funeral services for Mrs Mary Pulver were held Saturday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home with Dr George Kerr in charge. Pallbearers were Howard Mangold Delbert Darnell Jacobatan Anthes Dale Moody Davids and Armene Irwin. Burial followed in Keota cemetery.
Mrs Smith came back to this country on furlough in October of 1944.

Ford prices rise about 2 percent from 1942, Studebaker about 9 percent higher, GM about 5 percent lower, and Chrysler around 1 percent higher. Mrs. Howard L McCleery and Mrs Lloyd Conger returned from Chicago with merchandise for the store. Mr and Mrs Harold Pat Reynolds left for Center ville after his army discharge at Jefferson Barracks. Reynolds served nearly three years including over two years overseas as a sergeant. Mrs Reynolds resides in Center ville during his absence. Various local residents hosted dinners and visits while travelers also note solo flight successes by Mrs Harold Strum and a visit from Mrs George W Campbell and her mother. Campbell is the former Wilma Miller.
Fire destroyed the farm home of Frank Vodicka about eight o'clock yesterday evening four miles southwest of Kalona. The house, built about 60 years ago, burned with the milk and wood houses. no one was home and the cause is unknown. Fire equipment from Kalona arrived too late to save the house, which included the lease and contents insured by Washington Farmers Mutual.
Public school vocal music director Broghammer will depart Wednesday night for West Union to observe Thanksgiving recess at home. Yesterday guests at Charles Hazen’s home included Dwight and Marilyn Hazen, Alfred Neal of Des Moines, E D Crossett of Grinnell, Rex Hazen and Brighton residents, and Howard Hazen’s family. The gathering honored Rex Hazen who soon travels to California to enroll at Stanford University. Gift endowments to Stanford exceed three million dollars.
