Elmer Reinier age 46 died at a local hospital after a skull fracture from a truck collision with a pole in the town’s south area. Born near Ohio he moved to the community 18 years ago. Survived by his wife mother three children three sisters and a brother. Coroner CP Phillips said no inquest will be held.
Cedar Rapids inaugurates a sub regional Veterans Administration office to serve 29 eastern Iowa counties. A staff of 25 under Des Moines regional leadership will speed disability claims education applications and other veterans affairs. Manager David D Elliott, a two war veteran with ten years VA experience, heads the office.
Donald Andreson , 25, of near Elwood, died Tuesday in a corn picker on his father Alfred Andreson s farm when he was pulled into the power take-off. Surviving are his wife and two children. Body taken to Falster Star Brave funeral home of Lost Nation.
DES MOINES Iowa will return to two license plates for all motor vehicles in 1947 state commissioner of public safety Fred L Wilkins said. With restrictions on steel removed Iowans will get two plates for the first time since 1942. New plates for 1946 will go on sale in all county treasurers offices Dec 1. Passenger car motorists will be given only one plate.
The Clinton Bridge commission will start a traffic survey Saturday with Iowa Highway Commission workers stopping all vehicles on both high bridges. Drivers will be interviewed to locate nine travel hotspots to guide site decisions for a new bridge over the Mississippi River.
Charles City union action shows office employees voting 91 percent to join with plant workers in a possible strike over wages. Plant workers had authority to strike and both unions belong to the United Farm Equipment & Metal Workers of America. Representatives met with a U S conciliation commissioner to avert a strike.
Davenport superintendent Harvey E. Davies said the Town Soldiers' Orphans' Home has nearly 90 influenza cases among 450 children, with twelve employees ill. He reported the illnesses are acute but of short duration and added school absenteeism among students is noted by Dr. Paul B. Jacobson.
At Leon Beatty post meeting the American Legion reported 202 current members and launched a drive for new recruits, especially WWII veterans. The group will sponsor a Washington waste paper collection on Thursday Nov 29 at 1 pm, with S. W. Kuster in charge, to aid paper salvage. IOWA CITY The Phi Epsilon Pi fraternity house sold Tuesday for 12700 dollars to Charles S Brady of Davenport Ia. The sale followed a Johnson county district court order after First Trust & Savings Bank of Davenport sued for non payment of a mortgage.
Washington residents are urged to send Christmas gifts to hospitalized soldiers at Schick hospital Clinton. Acceptable items include books categories games stationery toiletries apparel and tobacco items. Gifts must be bought in Washington and delivered in original wrappings to local drug stores by December 10 under the supervision of Fred Downing of the Legion.
Merle Mike Dawson of Washington was fined 200 dollars and costs in Sigourney district court for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Wift Red Christner paid a 25 dollar fine and costs in a justice court for intoxication. Both fines were settled after arrest by a highway patrolman.
Mrs Albert Lay announced that the employment office will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, affecting job services and client appointments.

New York November 21 Robert Benchley actor humorist died today at Harkress Navaltion of the Presbyterian hospital after a cerebral hemorrhage. He entered the hospital on Saturday and his death was described as sudden. Benchley, 66, was famed for personifying the little man and ignoring his own health.
