Des Moines reports Iowa farmers are expected to purchase more war bonds in the sixth loan than any prior drive. Flying Instructor And Student Die In Training Crash
A Fort Dodge instructor Robert Fretscher 30 and his pupil Gilbert Freeman 28 were killed when their training plane crashed about a mile south of the airport. Fretscher was an experienced instructor with the Eno Flying Service. Freeman had only a few lessons. The cause was not determined. Fretscher’s wife and parents survive. Freeman is survived by brothers Warren and Ben. This was the first fatal accident in 14 years for the service.

Karl Harlow, 10, of 2665 EK Ovid Ave, was shot in the cheek with an empty gun by his brother Eric, 10, while playing at their grandparents home in Des Moines. Doctors at Des Moines General Hospital reported he was getting along fine. the bullet entered the right cheek near the nose and exited above the ear.
