Presidents of five Iowa state education boards outlined a total request of 9 662 000 for new buildings and equipment to the 1945 legislature during a conference with an interim committee. A summary by the board of control and superintendents was to follow before the committee drafts its recommendations.
Emmetsburg report notes Clyde and Merton Lyons both known as Dea Moines Brothers plead not guilty to assault with intent to murder. Trial postponed to January terms as Howard Knight, a local farmer, accuses them of shooting and attempting to run him down after objections to hunting on Knight’s land.
Des Moines reports Inwood Lyon county became first town to reach its bond quota. With a $16,485 target it surpassed $18,000 in bonds sold. Nearby towns Lansing Postville in Allamakee County and Peterson in Clay County also exceeded their quotas in early reports.
A special Thanksgiving service will be held Thursday evening at eight o'clock at Prairie Flower Baptist Church eight miles northwest of Washington. The program includes preludes, hymns, scripture Psalm 103, praise and testimony, a Leonard Booth solo, and a sermon "Thanksgiving and Its Issues" by Rev. A E Diddams. An invitation is extended to all.
An armada of more than 2350 Allied aircraft struck German synthetic oil plants at Merseburg Hamburg Harburg on November 21. The raid involved over 1250 Liberators and Fortresses with extensive fighter cover from 8th and 9th Air Forces. Heavy bombers targeted Leuna at Merseburg where a major air battle had occurred weeks earlier.
At a county conference held at the Y steps, attorney L J Kehoe was named chairman of the executive committee to organize a Washington county veterans service group. The panel aims to assist returning soldiers with employment loans compensation and educational benefits. About 40 people attended including Lt Com John K Valentine former Iowa governor now with the selective service and other civic and veterans groups.
United Press reports a large B 29 force attacked Nagasaki and Oma ura in northwest Kyushu in two waves at 9 45 a m Tokyo radio said 70 to 80 bombers engaged in fierce duels with Japanese fighters claiming eight shot down and one damaged. Other American air activity targeted additional Pacific objectives including Manila and northern to New Guinea.

Soviet forces with tanks and dive bombers surged into western Latvia pressing an attack against about 400,000 Germans pinned along the Baltic coast near Liepaja. Other Soviet units advanced northeast of Budapest threatening Hungary’s out posts, as Miskolc neared encirclement.
Gen Dwight D Eisenhower warned the German army to fight to the bitter end west of the Rhine saying the final European war battle will occur there with six allied armies hammering the Nazis. He urged maximum pressure at home and on the front until surrender and called for more supplies for soldiers and civilians.
French mobile forces rolled up the southern front as Germans retreated from eastern France toward Mulhouse and Colmar. The 1st army reached Mulhouse area near Basel with tanks said to reach the city. Rhineland defenses pulled back east. Allied air support backed advances across the Aachen front as the Western front shifted eastward. The British 2nd Army neared Venlo fortress as American units pressed toward Gereonsweiler Linich and near Duesseldorf.
