Des Moines reports E. H. Birmingham federal revenue collector for Iowa warns that breaking packages of cigarettes and selling them from glass bowls and boxes violates internal revenue laws. He says violators face fines up to 1000 dollars and as much as two years imprisonment.
Senator Guy M. Gillette of Cherokee, defeated by Gov. Bourke in the Hickenlooper race, filed with the secretary of state showing campaign expenses of 6808 dollars and receipts totaling 7202 dollars.
Leroy Jones, defeated candidate for Newton township constable, filed a contest of the election of Ralph Sparks with County Auditor William Kirkpatrick. Jones, who lost by 47 votes, claims more than 200 votes were not counted in a Newton third ward precinct and that votes were counted illegally for Sparks while some legal Jones votes were not counted. The contest calls for a recount of all Newton and Newton township ballots.
Pearl Mieynek, 47, operator of a beauty shop, was killed when a Rock Island freight train struck her car half a mile east of Earlham. She lived five miles southeast with husband Charles J Mieynek and usually crossed Cemetery crossing daily. A partly eaten sandwich was found in the overturned car near the smashed vehicle in the ditch.
The state health department reports no sickness linked to algae in Ottumwa water after tests. Algae affect taste and odor, prompting carbon filter installation and a planned water change within three weeks by waterworks trustees.

In San Francisco on November 18, fifty African American Navy enlisted men were found guilty of mutiny for refusing to load ammunition after the Port Chicago explosion. Sentences ranged from 8 to 15 years, announced by the 12th Naval District.
Everette Tobin Joe Tobin and Carl Hancher are named in a Riverside obituary. Burial took place in Elm Grove cemetery. Mr Tobin died suddenly at his home from a heart attack.
