Des Moines reports Postmaster L. S. Hill urges sending Christmas cards to Siam and other distant destinations today to ensure delivery. The column notes cards and packages to foreign countries should be mailed early.
Newton native Lieut. Harold B. Miller of the U S Navy turns author in the current American magazine. Blaine and Jean Dupont Miller co author the fiction with Miller and his wife. Miller previously contributed to aeronautical publications.
DES MOINES reductions on discontinued and slow moving wines and liquors, ranging from 15 to 42 percent, were announced by the Towa liquor control commission for all class A stores. The catalog outlines wine pairings with meals and meats.
Iowa City Professor Jacob Van der Zee city aldermanic leader condemns a district court action he says aids the power campaign. He objects to a $28 140 preliminary PWA grant and a court order that bars the city from spending even gift funds on the power project.
Edward Cunningham 45 of Waterloo suffered a broken upper jaw and a crushed nose when kicked by a horse while working on the William Hilmer farm 15 miles south of Waterloo.
Der Zee Iowa Rhodes selections secretary lists eight University of Iowa candidates who will compete with 19 other Iowa students in state exams at Grinnell December 14. Two will represent Town in national tests. Four US scholars will enter Oxford in October 1986 with £400 a year for two years.
Grant Teague a farm youth near Oelwein is critically ill with physical and mental collapse attributed to grief and self blame after the death weeks ago of Arthur Kunkle. The pair had traveled to Yellowstone National Park last summer and split at Omaha. Kunkle rode a freight home while Teague waited, later finding Kunkle's body beside a railway near Council Bluffs. Mayre Kunkle's first trip from home.
Mrs. C Edwin Moore wife of the assistant county attorney admitted she was interested in her husband's work and was excused as a prospective juror in a murder case. She said she would try not to let his connection influence her but it might.
At noon today the Y M C A drive reported $2548 raised in the first half day with wards split at $740, $964, $328 and $411. A $125 pledge from the Y's Men's Club plus a pending donation from the American Pearl Button company plant were noted as additions. The drive continues until complete.
The Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen began voting on a proposed strike against the Chicago Burlington and Quincy railway. The grievance committee authorized the strike vote to protest the railroad's refusal to employ both an engineer and fireman on streamlined diesel and electrically equipped locomotives.
Sheriff Harod M. Putnam led two appraisal groups today to fix compensation for land condemned for public improvements. In the west part of town the six appraisers valued property owned by Emmett Hays, Jay Brewer and Mrs. Dora 7% alley for sewer costs, while a second set near Wellman assessed land to be condemned for state highway work. The state supreme court chief justice designated the committee, with members from southern Iowa including H. G. Richardson of Washington.
Sheriff Putnam disclosed that a ring of check passers who operated in Washington on October 12 and cashed forged checks at three stores has been identified. Suspects include Walter Kukgaber who verified a $12 check, with others from Wapello and Mt Pleasant facing charges and potential transfer for trial.
Chaplain John G. Rees spoke to the Rotary Club about his work with 1500 inmates at Fort Madison. He discussed causes of crime including education, environment, and heredity, and noted prisoners entering as grown men.
Max Duckworth former county official and key witness in the O Connor gambling conspiracy case was cited for contempt of court after refusing to testify. Judge Earl Peters warned he must answer questions from special prosecutor H. M Havner or face penalties while noting Duckworth could have claimed constitutional rights to avoid self incrimination. Duckworth alleged Hayner warned him he would be indicted if he did not appear before the grand jury.
Dr J Renwick McCollopell of Cedar Rapids spoke at the Presbyterian Men’s Brotherhood dinner last evening. The program featured Miss Eva Diller, Dave Fulton, and Leo Kennedy in music before McCullough’s address on “When a Man Grows Up” urging maturity through selflessness and usefulness, with continued discussion hinted on page 2.
The district court remains occupied with Snyder and Hayes versus Gammon over shares bought at a 1932 community sale that died shortly after. A jury of twelve was impaneled, with both sides represented by named counsel.
A three judge federal court in Des Moines ruled the gross receipts tax provision of the Iowa chain store tax law unconstitutional while upholding the flat store tax provision as constitutional. The decision was announced November 19 with 41 percent reported in brackets.
Reserved seats for the Little Theater play on Wednesday night are 35 cents. Other seats will cost 25 cents for the two performances on Wednesday and Thursday. About 150 of the best seats for each night go on sale at 8 o clock Wednesday morning at the box office.
Ottumwa authorities struggle to identify a 21 year old male found near the Milwaukee rail yards. Coroner John Drake suspects murder as a rope was around the neck and the head battered. The body appeared dead about three to four hours before discovery.
A new Iowa weather record was set as clouds and fog blanketed the state for seven days straight. Federal meteorologist Charles P. Reed said tonight will clear skies with sharply falling temperatures, followed by warmer conditions Wednesday while snow falls lightly.
Tomorrow opens a WPA fever project sewing room on the third floor of the courthouse in charge of Mrs. Mina Richardson. Fifteen women funded, though likely fewer will start, drawn from relief rolls to sew items for needy relief families in the county.
Rehearsals for The Messiah will now be held Friday nights starting at 7 o clock at the Methodist church. The director hopes more men join tenor and bass sections as crowds grow. Weather reports show light, cold rain across most of the state today.

He will appear in his north pole cabin on a huge truck with cathedral chimes and the national colors as he greets residents and offers entertainment throughout the celebration.

David McGaffey won the large anniversary cake and Mrs. Oscar Sheetz received the free basket of groceries during Dewit's 2nd anniversary sale day Saturday. The store marked a big day with special prizes and customers in attendance.
Over 50 attendees gathered at the public library for book reviews during Book Week. Mrs Victor Westphal spoke on Spring Came on Forever by Bess Streeter Aldrich, with Miss Eva Denny and Mrs Homer Stephen hosting. The event featured a Bible display and a 400th anniversary of the English Bible talk by Rev A A Wing.
