Des Moines reports Otto Morgenthaler a 25 year old Grinnell farm hand arrived with two years of savings and a railroad ticket and a gold watch. He told police a gunman forced him into a car and robbed him of 240 dollars before leaving him at the station.
A bandit stole several thousands of dollars from the Montgomery Ward Co store in Fort Dodge. He lured the manager and assistant manager downtown to assist, claiming to be an engineer from the Chicago office. The suspect, Mr Dillingham, instantly changed into a crude gunman.
A Burlington duck was killed by Henry Ewinger on Otter Island on November 2. A band found on the duck had been placed by Herbert Buettner across the river in October 1934, with traces of two other bands on ducks shot by Ewinger underway. The incident prompts hunters to trace banding origins, a rare but notable practice.
Des Moines reports J. W. Orchard Jr., a mail carrier, was injured and placed in a coma after losing control of his car and crashing into the parlor of State Agent C. W. McNaughton's home. He was taken to Owa Lutheran hospital with head injuries.
Cedar Rapids Frances Aker y aged 27 was wounded in a hunting accident near Marion. He suffered back and leg injuries when a shotgun discharged accidentally. His condition is not serious.
Luverne votes to keep street lights on after 11 30 p m by contracting with Iowa Public Service Co to provide power through the night. The change ends the prior practice of lights turning off at a late hour.
Oskaloosa physician and poet Dr. Jas Cournyer, known for aiding the sick and gifting a rose and verse, fatally ends his life addressing his own illness. The blind osteopath and local figure had long cheered others despite his own ailments.
About 150 high school debaters gathered in Bloomfield for demonstrations lectures and discussions on debate methods. Teams from the University of Town and University of Missouri participated in the conference.
William Millard 86 justice of peace at Rudd died minutes after being struck by a car in Charles City. He had a broken arm but the shock of the collision proved fatal.
Mr and Mrs John Widner recently moved from Bloomfield to Richland and are former Richland residents. He is a section lineman for Northwestern Bell long distance service and they reside at 412 South Fourth Avenue. Mrs Widner belongs to the Eastern Star and they arrived Oct 1, staying at Griff Clark house 825 South Fourth. Mrs Widner expressed optimism about Washington. The Widners replaced BE Hicks who moved to Ft Madison exchange.
Lynn Geil of Des Moines testifies as the first state witness in the E. L. OConnor gambling conspiracy trial. The witness, called in Sioux City, is part of the state's push to link a statewide gambling syndicate with law enforcement, as Special Prosecutor Havner questions him after Diamond's opening statement.
Des Moines reports an all time sunless day record as ChoGue shaded the sun for ten straight days. Federal Meteorologist Charles D. Reed said a new record was possible with forecast cloudy weather and rain for Tuesday.
Snow sleet and freezing temperatures hit the Atlantic coast killing four people at sea and causing over 2 million dollars in damages. More than a dozen sailors were swept overboard from small boats as the storm drenched New England New York Pennsylvania and New Jersey with drifting snow and high tides.
About 200 delegates from Iowa high schools and colleges attended the annual student home economic clubs convention in Iowa City. University of Iowa and Coe College members acted as hostesses. Myra Turkington from Crawfords Ville, a senior at the state university, is president of the organization.
Mrs Agnes Van Winkle Weidner aged 53 died at Washington county hospital after a year of ill health and two weeks of treatment. Born June 5 1882 she was a daughter of George and Mary Van Winkle of Brighton. She married Henry Weidner on November 29 1912 and is survived by four brothers Harris Ed Fred Eldie and a Texas half brother Pete. Burial will be at Brighton cemetery after a January funeral at Hoskins funeral home.
At a Washington county Farm Bureau meeting W J Roudabush was re elected county agent for 1936. He enters his fourth year in the post and seventh year in county agent work, previously serving in Wayne county Iowa. The board approved a county wide membership drive the first week in December and outlined plans for the annual meeting in mid December. Organizing "Minute Men" progresses with 146 county members planned, aiming to spread agricultural facts and counter propaganda. The agency has expanded its AAA tied work and led 4 H club growth with new members and clubs forming.
Iowa study shows cities towns and counties must start PWA work by December 15 or risk higher bid costs or abandoning projects. Bids have been received on 41 of 257 proposed Iowa PWA projects with 100 still pending in the next four weeks. Washington approves 141 Iowa projects totaling about 10.5 million dollars with 4.7 million in federal grants.

Charles W. Davis of Washington learns his mother Mrs Cornelia Bickford Davis died Sunday in Pasadena California after a stroke. Burial is planned at Valhalla Memorial Park beside her husband. Survived by one son Charles two daughters and a son deceased. sister Mrs John W Teeter and brother James Bickford. lifelong Methodist member.
Marie Moershel, wife of William August Moershel, a Homestead pharmacist, files for divorce in district court claiming desertion in September 1932. She seeks custody of two minor daughters, 50 dollars temporary alimony and 30 dollars per month permanent alimony. The couple married April 4 1917 in Cook County, Illinois.
Indijianan Drinks no Water LINTON Ind UP John Eddy a 76 year old retired coal miner has not had a drink of water since 1895 when he moved to the Linton field He is a native of England and restricts his beverages to tea coffee and milk.
The United States Canada reciprocal trade pact lowers tariffs on many exports to renew trade and world peace. Farmers, lumber interests and labor groups criticize the deal saying it could ruin agriculture or harm the lumber industry. The National Grange calls the pact cold comfort for farmers while capital circles seek careful study of outcomes.
Riverside notices a time change for the Washington to Iowa City star route. The route will arrive at 4 45 P M instead of 5 40 P M, and Riverside mail must be deposited by 4 45 P M to be dispatched that afternoon.
The first annual Iowa Taxpayers association convention opens at 10 a m tomorrow at the Savery Hotel Des Moines with about 400 delegates from across the state. Governor Herring and Francis Johnson of Fort Dodge will welcome attendees and discuss taxation and public expenditure reforms including county groups and state aid for organizing taxpayers.
E Mont Reilly, Roosevelt and Harding campaign founder, names Michigan Senator Arthur H. Van Denberg as the most likely GOP presidential candidate. Reilly foresees Van Denberg defeating Roosevelt if nominated, despite Van Denberg’s own hesitance. Reilly cites a GOP field with few clear leaders and shifts focus to eastern contenders for the 1936 race.

In Albany, Oregon, R. L. Dendon hunted a deer but encountered a pursuing cougar. He shot the cougar, killing it instantly, allowing the white tail doe to escape along a ridge.
Selection of a jury to try Snyder & Hays vs John Gammon was in process when court adjourned for a noon recess. The jury was expected to be impaneled early this afternoon. The suit concerns hogs bought at a 1932 community sale here. the hogs later died and the plaintiffs, who sold the animals, seek the purchase price. Attorneys for Gammon are Dunham Morrison and Richard Stewart. Baldrige and Bailey represent Snyder & Hays. Automobile cases settled include Wade vs Burkholder for 2500 dollars. Martin McAdoo vs Moore was dismissed on a technicality.
Cars driven by William Sloat of Washington and Harold De Witt of Olds collided on primary road No. 2 east of Ainsworth late Saturday night. Both cars were badly damaged and occupants uninjured.
The report notes that neither driver nor any other person involved in the two vehicle cases sustained injuries. Both incidents occurred recently with no fatalities or serious harm.
Fifty two nations in the League of Nations imposed an economic war on Italy. An absolute boycott of Italian goods and denial of key supplies are in effect as Austria Hungary Albania and Paraguay abstain. The move aims to end Italy’s war in Ethiopia under Article 11 of the covenant.
