University of Iowa President Eugene A. Gilmore announced three annual prizes of 25 15 and 10 dollars for the best news stories of the year by members of the Iowa City school of journalism.
Firemen with an aerial ladder removed an orange and black East High flag from the 60 foot West High flagpole. The lower portion of the pole bore black enamel and the lawn nearby showed paint splatter. Rumors say students wired the flag as a defiant gesture before the East West football game.
Des Moines Des Justice club meeting at Pok county courthouse ended in a melee as Des Moines-Virgil Case, who filed information against Governor C L Herring over the Iowa Minnesota hog bet, was removed from the speaker platform by Deputy Sheriff Fred Miller amid hoots and cheers.
Eighty four men turned out to crib 35 acres of corn at the farm home of Mrs. James Zrostlik. Mrs. Zrostlik is at Mercy hospital Mason City after an operation on her left eye. Her husband was killed by bandits November 2 on the way to early mass at St Wenceslans church in Duncan. Mrs. Zroxtick suffered injuries from splintered glass when the bandits fired three times into the car. A son Clarence has recovered.
District Judge P J Nelson declares Iowa moratorium statute unconstitutional finding no current economic emergency and unequal protection for secured versus unsecured debtors and creditors.
The University of Iowa yearbook Hawkeye opens the 1936 campus queen contest to about 2,000 girls, removing sorority nomination control amid prior charges of sorority politics. Editor Evans aims for a broader, bumper crop of candidates.
Geologists from Iowa Illinois and Wisconsin will inspect rock formations in Clinton Dubuque and Jackson County as part of their third annual tri state convention. Prof Arthur C Trowbridge head of the University of Iowa geological department will lead the tour.
H A Moore 78 a farmer at the north edge of Columbus Junction died at his home Friday evening after a week long illness. Funeral services will be held 1:30 Sunday at the Richie funeral home with Rev V A Bloomquist in charge. Burial will be at Indian Creek cemetery east of Columbus Junction. He was born October 5 1862 in Deersville Ohio and had lived here several years. He leaves his widow three sons Ralph of Los Angeles Alan and Burdette at home and three daughters Stella Cline of Des Moines Cleda Gharsham of Wapello Florence Boash of Rock Island and several grandchildren.
A strange one hour shower fell in Fort Erie Ontario with no clouds in the sky and the moon shining brightly. No scientific explanation has been offered for the meteorological oddity observed at night.
Dr H M Gage addressed fathers at the education week program in the Washington high school auditorium urging strict standards for children and public affairs knowledge. The Washington State Bank has been admitted to the Federal Reserve System after examination by Federal Reserve representatives. Jesse W. Guy, 66, a longtime Washington County resident, died yesterday at his Dutch Creek township home after a period of declining health. He was born September 9, 1868, south of Washington and lived on county farms before years in Washington. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. He is survived by Mary White, his wife of 1890, three children, four grandchildren, two brothers, two sisters, and several in‑laws. He was active in the Odd Fellows, Royal Neighbors, and Woodmen.
Robert Minick pled guilty before Justice J. E. Bovee to intoxication and was sentenced to 30 days in the county jail. The term was suspended on good behavior. He admitted entering Mrs. Bertha Phillips’s West Second street home a week ago, saying liquor affected his awareness.
Cairo Egypt November 15 rioting broke out when police clashed violently with students of an industrial school. Several were injured and further disorders were feared as students planned a demonstration.

A Portsmouth man posted an ad offering to pay two hundred dollars for a job that would employ him for a year at fifteen dollars a week. The notice notes he received nine offers in response and is in the local Portsmouth paper.

Washington junior college presents The Late Christopher Bean next Thursday and Friday nights November 21 and 22. Evelyn Turner stars as Abby with John Applegate in a prominent role. The play, previously adapted to film, features special stage settings and ticket details to be announced soon.
Mrs. James M. Pulver 65 died at 7:15 AM at her home four miles southwest of West Chester in Dutch Creek township after a long illness. Born Dora Lemley March 19 1870 she taught school before her 38 year marriage Oct 6 to James M Pulver. She was a longtime Sunday school teacher and active in the United Presbyterian church and W R C of West Chester. Survived by her husband three brothers L L Charles E Lemley of Washington Caleb Lemley of Iowa City and many nieces and nephews.
The Ninth district of the Iowa Poultry Improvement association met at Mt Pleasant courthouse with strong attendance. Delegates from the area included Mrs Thomas Gerdes Mrs Raymond Anderson and Mr and Mrs Fred Wagner. New officers were elected Geo Fritz Burlington chairman H M Truesdale Fairfield vice chairman S G Baxter Mt Pleasant secretary and social plans were set with Mrs Gerdes and Mrs Wagner joining the social committee. Verne Ramseyer Oskaloosa and W M Vernon Ames spoke on poultry topics and issues of concern to raisers were discussed.

Kalona November 16 The contract for the new Kalona high school gymnasium and auditorium was not awarded at 2:30 Friday afternoon November 15 because all eight bids were too high. A new bid setting will likely be scheduled soon.
The play presented by the Methodist Ladies of Unit 8 will be held at Franklin Center on Wednesday night and at the church social hall on Saturday night. The Tuesday venue was misreported, listing Cedar Center instead of Cedar School in Franklin township.
