Firemen moved a Farmers Mutual Insurance fire truck to a northeast of town site to combat a grass fire that threatened buildings on a farm east of the old Living Lake school house. The blaze burned into an abandoned farm area but was brought under control with no serious damage.
In Helsinki the United States and the Soviet Union opened SALT talks in the historic banqueting hall, aiming for up to five years of negotiations to curb the nuclear arms race. Gerard C. Smith leads the U S team and Vladimir Semenov heads the Soviet delegation, with secret exploratory sessions to follow.
Washington Fortnightly Club joins General Federation of Women's Clubs to encourage local families to invite an elderly non relative to Thanksgiving dinner.
