The Washington County 4-H Leader Recognition banquet on Saturday November 22 has a ticket deadline of Monday November 17. 1969 County Council members invite 4-Hers to attend to honor leaders and top members. Tickets cost 1.50 each and may be bought at the County Extension Office by Monday.
Tens of thousands of young Americans marched down Pennsylvania Avenue to press for U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam. Extra security and barricades shielded the White House as authorities held a rally and later a folk rock concert on the Washington Monument grounds.
The Chicago riot conspiracy trial paused for the weekend after a lengthy session. Prosecutors and defense lawyers prepared for demonstrations in Washington as jurors’ testimony included an undercover officer admitting a false signed statement. Linn County sheriff's officers dismantled a non functional device found Friday by a county maintenance worker along U S 30 about one mile west of Mount Vernon. Charles Hinchliffe reported the device at the culvert edge. FBI was called to investigate the planted bomb containing blasting powder and two blasting caps in a glass jar with wires.
Washington High School showcased Love Rides the Rails a lively melodrama with Allen Lemke and Greg Hillman as villains Simon Darkway and Dirk Sneath. Rich Choate as Truman Pendennis and Noel Jarvis as Harold Stanfast led a strong cast while Mary Wagner as Carlotta Cortez added bold presence. A local barbershop quartet provided light interludes as director Michael Kramme delivered a polished performance.
U S Marine artillery pounded Viet Cong and North Vietnamese troops moving through jungle near South Vietnam's northern coast, killing 39. Battle communiques said allied forces killed nearly 300 Viet Cong and North Vietnamese in two days of fighting across Vietnam, with American losses at eight dead and 51 wounded. Forward observers directed 1st Marine Division fire near An Hoa, killing 22 Communist soldiers. 17 more from an estimated company were killed seven miles southeast of An Hoa. No USS casualties.
