Manning residents approve a $12,000 bond measure by a 583 to 157 vote for a swimming pool and recreation ground project. The total cost is about $25,000 with $10,000 covered by a government grant.
Iowa City pupil Myrna Sweeting, six, fell sixteen feet through an open manhole on school grounds while slipping past janitor W. J. Liebe. She was rushed to a hospital in critical condition with a fractured skull. daughter of Mr and Mrs Noble Sweeting.
Basil Groesbeck manager of Beaman Live stock Shipping association was seriously injured when a Guernsey bull trampled him while he led it to the scales to be weighed.
Voters at a special election approved a 28 000 bond issue for a high school addition in Waukon by 1116 to 276. The district has funds on hand and the measure was voted August 4 after failing to reach the 69 percent threshold by 20 votes.
Mrs. Marie Hanford Turnley sues Howard Turnley for 10000 in district court claiming half the profits from Arnolds Park concessions over the last two seasons. She says about May 1 1935 they agreed to operate jointly and share profits.
Two University of Iowa students frightened away a prowler from the Delta Gamma house. Crying witnesses Mildred Maplethorpe of Toledo and Mar on Lamar of Sioux City chased him to a third floor window and down a fire escape.
Forrest Bennett a 12 year Ottumwa police sergeant pleaded guilty to insubordination to a superior officer. An additional intoxication charge was withdrawn before the hearing. Bennett received a 60 day suspension.
Ames police said they received proof that John Roche a house prowler captured by an Iowa State student a week ago and suspected of involvement in a Chicago slaying was sane. Roche's father Irvine in Penver Cole wrote Chief W J Cure that Roche had escaped from Mount Pleasant state hospital years ago.
Claude Reister explains that 75 wild ducks kept with tame ones until this fall drifted away after decoy prohibition. About 55 ducks returned home while the rest roamed town. He expects offers to buy ducks killed by Washington men in their back yards once ownership is established.
Washington Navy report shows next year’s defense budget may top one billion dollars as Congress weighs larger army and air corps expansion plans. Officials estimate navy needs and harbor defenses on Pacific coast, Hawaii, and planned ship constructions will drive further increases in war and navy appropriations.
Tony Thompson, a St. Louis robber and murderer, is sentenced to be hanged for the killing of Martin Wolz in Louisa County Iowa. The Iowa Supreme Court upheld his death sentence, ruling the accomplice Paul Hake’s statements admissible. Thompson’s co-defendants Hake and Tallent pleaded guilty and serve life terms.
Rev D Chalmers Fulton of the United Presbyterian Church will deliver the annual Thanksgiving day sermon. The ministerial association announces the union service rotates yearly among pastors. This year the service is at the Methodist church with their choir providing music at ten o clock. Proceeds will aid a local needy cause.

Rebel airplanes bombed Madrid as troops advanced under cross fire. Bombs hit the Case de Tampo sector and other buildings including near the former Italian embassy. Loyal forces attempted to slow the advance with a smoke screen.

Helen Lee, 14, a high school student, was knocked down by a car around noon and taken to the county hospital. Doctors said her injuries were mainly scratches and bruises and she was discharged after treatment. Fay Webb Vallee, formerly married to a noted radio crooner, is in critical condition at a Banta Monica hospital after a major operation.
President Roosevelt appoints Charles Edison son of Thomas Edison as assistant secretary of the navy to succeed the late Henry L. Roosevelt. Roosevelt begins a goodwill tour to South America tonight.
Madame Schumann-Henk, renowned operatic and concert contralto, is near death at her Hollywood home. The singer, long celebrated for her mezzo repertoire, remains under attentive care as reports confirm her critical condition today.
Mrs Jack Horner of Brighton visited here yesterday on business. She met local associates and discussed potential commercial ties.
Mrs Mahin of Ainsworth was seen shopping in town yesterday. Local residents noted her appearance at several shops and markets during the afternoon.
The body of a premature baby girl, believed dead two days, was found in Plymouth county by 10 year old Buddy Ramesbothem. The infant was wrapped in a bedspread and authorities are investigating the case.
Robert Buck Avery 25 was arrested on a street corner in Sioux Rapids after a tip and taken to Rockwell City to face murder charges in the Parker case. He confessed involvement with Marvin O Shaughnessy and implicated O Shaughnessy while Lee Hank was cleared. Avery said he was in South Dakota picking corn and that the death penalty would be sought at trial.
