An Iowa Toronto column recounts Senor Frank Berner facing a charging bull in a feed lot. He climbed a fence to escape, then grabbed a heavy steel automobile axle and struck the bull on the head. The blow killed the animal.
Dr. Charles Bell of Maryville Missouri failed to observe a stop sign and his car was struck by a CCC truck driven by Tommy Young on the way to Omaha Nebraska. A young woman patient was in the car and suffered shock while two other women escaped serious injury.
Clarinda is named statewide City Beautiful winner for the third consecutive year as Federated Garden Clubs of the state cites Lilac planting two flower shows a garden judging school and yard garden cleanliness as top features Manning places second in the annual contest with improvements in homes and yards noted.
Iowa City Mayor Thomas F. Martin acted within his legal rights when he named Charles O. Paine chief of police on April 1, 1935, to replace William H. Bender, in a divided Iowa Supreme Court ruling by five to three.
Sheriff W. W. Christian of Cedar county and Robert Morden of Tipton traveled to Sterling Colorado with Howard Kingsbury. On return at Kearney Nebraska two policemen burst into their hotel room and arrested prem after noting the car case number. A Muscatine policeman later spotted the license number prompting another explanation.
Des Moines reports that under the national social security law a working girl must disclose marriages kept secret from her employer and a man who lies about his age to get a job faces scrutiny. The act requires truth on application blanks and falsifications may be caught in later checks for pensions or unemployment insurance.
Des Moines reports George Keller assistant WPA administrator selected by Relief Director Harry L. Hopkins to lead the Works Progress Administration in Iowa, signaling a top administrative switch in state efforts.
In Lile France November 18 officials report Socialist Interior Minister Roger Salengro died by gas in his home. The 46 year old minister, pressured by war record attacks, was found dead by a servant as a censorship order curbed news of the tragedy.
Rome reports Italy and Germany formally recognize Gen Franco’s forces, allowing arms shipments to the rebels and signaling a break with the leftist government backed by Alicante. The Mediterranean fleet may blockade Catalonia to intercept Russian arms to Madrid’s opponents.
Postmaster M DeLong reports youths have vandalized rural U S mail boxes with sand and other mischief. He warns such acts break federal law and could bring serious trouble. parents urged to instruct children to only deposit mail. Mrs Ora Kirkpatrick and others visited the Applegate family Monday and Tuesday.
A private funeral was held at 1:30 PM in the home of Mrs. L. A. Guy after a weeklong pneumonia illness. Dr. H. C. Whiting conducted the service. Burial is in Walpole, Massachusetts, with Earl Young and wife accompanying the body. Amy Smith Clapp, born in Massachusetts, 68 years ago, had one son Earl Young surviving in the Boston area.
T. A. Morris a Keota businessman and long time Keota school board president dies from injuries in a Richland auto crash Sunday night. Funeral services set for Thursday at 2:30 in the Keota school auditorium with Methodist and Federated church ministers. Knights of Pythias to conduct graveside rites. Surviving are his widow Pearl Dizeleiss Morris and several children including Sheldon Morris of Grinnell and Mrs. Frank Orndorit. He helped establish local wells and built the gymnasium at Keota High School.
Washington county hosts a large poultry show at City Hall with hundreds of birds including chickens turkeys ducks and geese. Superintendent Gerald Duncan notes record entries and displays featuring Japanese lilkies turkens Red Pyre Leg horns and game birds amid corn and quilt showcases. Free coffee is offered with snacks for a small charge as displays fill the hall through the week.
A mysterious bullet struck a passenger coach near the Scott county jail as a Rock Island train departed Davenport. Officials said a window shattered while passengers were uninjured. Police consider a sniper act or possible accidental shot.

At the Buenos Aires conference opening December 1, President Roosevelt will address delegates as two main proposals dominate discussions. One calls for embedding Monroe doctrine principles into a collective pact involving 21 American republics, with a second key proposal following.
Postmaster M C DeLong asked Washington employers who did not receive blanks sent Monday under the new social security law to apply at the post office. About 225 forms were mailed to laborers. some were missed and must be returned promptly. A check up will begin tomorrow and all require completion before Saturday.
Miss Rogie Jones and Miss Blanche Smith departed early today for Des Moines to spend the day. They plan to lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sage at noon.
A directed verdict for the defendant ended the Simmons versus Durst automobile accident case after the judge ruled the plaintiff failed to prove recklessness by John Durst. Miss Simmons, a Keota High School student, was injured when the Durst car wrecked near Keota two years ago. Jury to return tomorrow as other civil suits await trial.
Washington residents are invited to view the subsistence garden exhibit in the G A room at the court house. The display opens tomorrow at 10 a.m. and runs to 4 p.m.
Washington reports a wave of resignations on the eve of President Roosevelt’s second term. Rex Tugwell under secretary of agriculture has tendered his resignation and will join American Molasses. Jim Farley plans to quit as postmaster general, with Frances Perkins and Daniel Roper expected to follow. Harry Woodring remains as war secretary.
Justices of the Peace J E Boyee ordered J Simpkins of Stockport bound over to the district court after a justice court hearing. Simpkins stands charged with uttering a false check for 215 dollars given to H L Whittaker, the complainant. Bonds were set at 50 percent and furnished by Simpkins.
Horace Worley age 73 died at five this morning at his home East Fourth street after a pneumonia illness. Funeral at 2:30 Thursday at Sherman’s with Rev. W J Stevens. burial Elm Grove cemetery. Born April 1 1863 in Neep Cotter son of Martin and Amanda Worley. survived by widow Emma Wilson and several half-siblings and a step-daughter. He lived in Manson Cedar Falls Columbus Junction and Washington 18 years and worked a buggy line and later in truck gardening.
