A column notes the annual state high school scholarship contest nicknamed the brain derby will be held June 5 and 6 at the University of Iowa. Prof. E F Lindquist, director, says about 1 100 preparatory students will compete for individual honors and the derby title of king or queen.
District Judge C F Wennerstrum overruled an application to impound with the court clerk the records of the Farmers Credit Co. Attorney for former president A F Beck had sought to block access to the files. Beck faces trial on a charge of falsification of corporate records.
Clarence John Krein suffered a badly crushed hand while removing stalks from a operating corn picker and was taken to University Hospital in Iowa City. Frederick Decker also tore two fingers while getting his machine ready for operation.
James Bree den, 5, was seriously burned when his clothes ignited near a rubbish blaze. He ran a block to his Fort Dodge home with flames on his chest neck and arms, sustaining severe burns.
Sioux City authorities pursue a $10,000 action under Iowa's fair price act against Stewart-Warner Corp. and Station operator M. M. McCollum. The suit alleges the dealer sold a South Wind automobile heater to Charles M. Penning for 17.60 violating an Oct 24 price maintenance agreement setting 19.95.
In Des Moines officials report pheasants hid in dense weeds along sloughs and streams making hunting difficult. Despite complaints there were birds, census data show a marked increase in Iowa pheasant numbers over the past year.
In Cedar Rapids burglars who visited the Shrine temple to steal proceeds from the policeman's ball failed to crack the office safe. Recorder Walt Workman found a note on his desk reading Too tough for us If anybody says they were robbed, they lie. The checkup confirmed the note’s claim.
Dr Richard Driver says Black Hawk county supervisors refused to pay for throat cultures of diphtheria carriers and to owe immunization fees since Oct 24. He notes all cases affect families on re- Nef or borderline carriers while board members claim medical costs for re- Hef clients are too high in Waterloo.
Kay Tapscott 5, daughter of Mr and Mrs Glen Tapscott of Mount Ayr, wins a Hollywood success after seven years in the city. The child, now known as Kay Scott, enters Our Gang with a weekly salary from 100 to 750 dollars. Grandparents reside in Mount Ayr.
Official Iowa canvass shows Gillette leading Dickinson by 1 685 votes with about half the counties reported Webster Clinton Marshall and Wapello counties showed Gillette losses from unofficial tallies. Roosevelt condemns Nazi treatment of Jews triggering international reaction as Germany’s reply awaited.
Harland Mead of the Iowa State Safety Council will broadcast from station WBSUI Thursday at 7:45 PM. Former county safety council president, Mead has long led safety education efforts and invites Washington residents to listen and support the movement.
At Leon Beatty post meeting yesterday evening plans were made for a county Legion meeting tentatively set for December 13. A four member committee led by Commader Ed Square will work with Auxiliary members on the entertainment and program. The committee includes George Baker Jay Brewer Leland Carris and Ralph Moot Hart. Adjutant Ives McKay reported 93 members in the post and a push to reach or exceed last year’s 173 members. A district feed of pie and coffee closed the meeting. The first district has surpassed its quota of 2390 with 2438 members. state membership last year was 2262.
About 60 men attended the Presbyterian Brotherhood gathering Monday night with a fine dinner by the Ladies Aid. J J Kistler Iowa City athletic coach spoke on education, stressing home church and school shaping citizens and leadership. He urged schools to teach how to live not just how to earn, and praised athletics for courage, cooperation, and good play over sheer wins.
Tom Collins was sentenced by Mayor R. L. Lytle to 30 days in the county jail for intoxication. He was arrested by city officers. Collins joins another 30 day prisoner, with the other sentence set to expire in a few days.
Irene Williott of Columbus Junction spent yesterday in Washington. She was accompanied by a delegation and attended meetings with local officials and regional representatives seeking support for community projects.
The Washington Y M C A campaign to raise 5150 for next year continues. Pledged now 4722, short by 428. Volunteers urged to contribute. funds support next year’s work. Board Praise for canvass. totals: 1612 first 1175 second 899.50 third 775 fourth 560.50 specials.
Louis Jeter opens a mattress manufacturing plant in a room of the old Bell carriage factory on North Iowa avenue north of the National Bank of Washington. Four workers join him including Victor Blevins William Kennedy Jasper Best and Clinton Summy. Jeter and Blevins live in trailers on road No 2 at the town east edge. They moved from Allison Iowa after prior stints at Pringhar and Fonda Iowa. They plan to make their home.
The city and county won approval to proceed with a joint cemetery road project after the regional Public Works Administration in Omaha signaled support. The $12 000 project covers one third of a mile from Iowa avenue to Elm Grove Cemetery with 55 percent city county funding and 45 percent PWA aid. A council resolution reactivated the plan and officials urged immediate notification to finalize formal steps.
New York State Motor Vehicle Commissioner Charles Hartnett was arrested in Dewey’s office on an indictment accusing him of accepting bribes totaling $67,000 from a large transportation company and its subsidiaries between 1934 and 1938. The case includes a second charge of extortion with a possible 13 year prison term and $4000 fine.
Five auto firms Cox Motor Keifer Garage Mace Motor Tucker and Eicher Willits Motor offer $5 cash each in attendance prize coupons at their shops. Fill out coupons to join the $25 total draw and qualify by visiting all five. Also, Journal ads include auto license numbers for free theater tickets valid on November dates. Winners announced Friday November 25.
The county board completed the canvass of poll books after last Tuesday’s election. Dickinson won the senatorial race by 1,166, Wilson governor by 1,390, and Martin for congress by 1,606. Sheriff H. M. Putnam was re elected with a 2,843 margin and 4,353 total votes, the largest for any Republican ticket candidate.
Judge J. G. Patterson assigns seven jury cases and six equity cases for the November term. Jury trials begin Monday November 21 at 1 30 pm with listed cases in order. equity trials follow after jury completion. Seats for the junior college production Lucky Star go on sale Thursday at eight o clock. The show is Friday night at the high school auditorium. Sales will be at Phillips A M Hebner drug store.
County Treasurer George Marion Sr. announced 96.6 percent of Washington County taxes for the year have been paid, with $714,590.01 collected of $739,586.97 due after homestead exemptions. The tax sale is set for Monday, December 5, and delinquent lists will run in two weekly publications starting November 19.
Fire crews were summoned to the Fred Kolesick shell crushing plant in the northeast town area near the Pearl button plant and railway tracks. A gasoline leak caused the blaze, which was extinguished before firefighters reached the scene, leaving little damage.
Wayland, November 15. Mrs. Chris Richard died at 11 15 this morning at her daughter Mrs. Peter Graber home two miles southwest of Wayland. She had been ill with heart trouble for weeks. Formerly Katie Widmer she was 75. A lifelong Sugar Creek church member her husband preceded her in death. Survived by daughters Mrs. Graber and Ida Richard both of Wayland.
A repeated immunization clinic for diphtheria prevention will be held next Tuesday from 9 30 to 11 30 a m at the Y M C A. The Washington county health unit thanks area physicians and P T A groups for aid and notes about one third of yesterday’s 350 immunized children were under five. Mrs John Rohrer is reported improving after hospital care last Friday.
Two sons named Noeah and Peter Richard live southeast of Wayland with their family.
