Dubuque-Dale Howarth 14 son of Mr and Mrs James G Howarth of Washington junior high is in Finley hospital with a brain concussion after a fall during an interclass basketball game in the school gym.
The Black Hawk county board approved a 20 percent mile secondary road program costing 88000. The project awaits state highway commission approval. State highway commissioner A. A. Hurst from Maquoketa will be in Waterloo to discuss the plan today.
Mrs C L Rigby of Stanwood suffers a broken neck when a car overturns after a tire blows near Henderson Texas. Her husband and Mr and Mrs C H Haesemyer of Stanwood escape injury in the crash.
Sidney-Jack Bryan, a Sidney telephone lineman, was accidentally shot and killed on a pheasant hunt near Knox when a gun discharged while the group was taking firearms apart to depart. Dr. Ralph Lovelady rushed him to Hamburg hospital, but he died shortly after.
Rudolph Eggena Skockford son of Mr and Mrs Harm Skockford is in very critical condition at Cedar Valley hospital after his right hand was caught in a corn picker. His brother Albert Eggena has donated blood for transfusions.
Contributions totaling 4866 were received during the year ending June 30. Dr EB D Plass on the executive committee of the Women's Field Army announced that thirty percent was forwarded to the American Society for the Control of Cancer while the remainder funded campaign expenses and office staff.
In Sioux City two police stopped a Bekins Van and Storace Co. truck after another truck was damaged by rocks, amid a long running clash between operators and union drivers. Rocks damaged a radiator of a Towns Transfer Co. truck parked behind the Labor Temple as workers say they are locked out while operators claim a strike.
Fort Madison police disclose Paul Pogeland 26 who was fatally shot near the funeral home last week had identified Albert Decker’s killer. Pogeland earlier worked with Decker and Eugene Cooper at American Work and Hoe Co. plant. Cooper and two others were sentenced to life for Decker murder.
Des Moines police arrest Bob Feller of Van Meter after a hunting trip in north Iowa on a 60 mph run. Municipal Judge Ralph Powers released him on his own bond for a hearing on November 25. Present in the vehicle were his father William Feller of Van Meter and L D Ruswell, Ralph Willis, and Frank W. of Des Moines. Feller was previously cited last month near Iowa City for speeding through the university city.
Secretary Henry A. Wallace forecast 14 or 15 cents per bushel in corn benefits for farmers under the 1939 farm program. He said Iowa would see between 35 and 40 million dollars in benefit payments next year and as much as 70 million dollars in loans at a 67 cent rate under the new yield estimate.
A fire yesterday evening destroyed a garage and a 1931 Chevrolet car at Hul Boyd's home on South Walton avenue just outside the city limits. The blaze started shortly after Boyd placed the car in the garage and went inside. fire crews from the city and Farmers' Mutual failed to save the structure. Insurance covered the loss. Separate reports mixed directions for two rural fires noted in the Journal.
Evan H. Davis 71 of Wyman died at home last night about 10:30 after eight weeks illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 PM at Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church with Rev. Davis officiating. interment at Cambria cemetery. He was born February 1867 to John and Mary Davis and married Eunice Evans October 21, 1896. Survived by his wife four children Robert John of Olds Thomas Dewey Hugh Homer and Sarah Miriam at home a brother Hugh Davis and sister Lydia Davis Crawfordsville. Two sisters and a brother preceded him.
City authorities announced federal approval for a PWA grant to build a road to Elm Grove cemetery. Mayor Lloyd Lytle scheduled a city council meeting this afternoon to act on the grant, which had been held up and nearly abandoned before today’s decision.
Dr. Ralph Atkinson of Los Angeles will lead a fellowship and service conference in the Washington church on Thursday November 17 with three other church leaders. Delegates from Keokuk presbytery and southeastern Iowa congregations expected. The program includes a two o clock afternoon session a 6 30 potluck dinner and a 7 45 evening service with Dr Atkinson speaking. Free will offerings will cover expenses.
In Le Mars Iowa Mrs Maybelle Knox daughter of Mrs L A Trow is held on forgery during the death probe. She denies involvement in her mother's death and says she did not know the elderly woman was secretly buried in a homemade coffin behind the house. Meanwhile work at the Knox residence stopped as officers abandon efforts to locate Sumner Knox the missing husband.
Davenport physician Dr. Karl Vollmey described venom from deadly snakes as a remedy for hemorrhages during the opening session of the Iowa Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology annual meeting. He claimed the venom's use has been successful.
Des Moines reports that the Republican legislature next January will face higher appropriations for state institutions. State board of control chairman Harry White said he would present asks for 15 institutions but gave few details. A $10 million building program including a new state hospital may be considered. A state planning board recommendation would double mental hospital operating funds, raising from 6 1/2 cents to about $1 per patient per day.
Official canvass shows 62 more votes for L. J. Dickinson in Wellman but 100 more votes for Dickinson in Washington township. Revised Wellman totals give Dickinson 384 and Gillette 10p for senator after adjustments. Gillette gains 48 votes overall. county totals swing with about 75 more for Republicans and 256 more for Democrats. Supervisors finish checks. final figures pending county auditor.

Spevacek. Ayers pled guilty to breaking and entering and was sentenced to six months but released on good behavior. Crandall posted bonds after an assault charge, leaving one prisoner in jail. County Attorney Stewart filed a drunken driving charge against Laird Hawkins.
Federal charges accuse 97 firms and individuals led by Dr. Herman Bundesen of a nationwide conspiracy to fix milk and ice cream prices. Indictments cover 57 firms for milk price fixing and 40 for monopolizing ice cream, with defendants from New York to Baltimore. Bundesen seeks leave of absence to fight the charges.
At the Y M C A clinic for diphtheria prevention, 550 children received the toxoid vaccine this morning. Dr. D. C. Barrett, director of the county health unit, said it may be the largest clinic in the county and another session will be held soon to serve those turned away. Richmond clinic is scheduled tomorrow morning from 9 30 to 11 40.
