Towa City debaters from Oxford University won a decision over the University of Iowa team by an audience vote of 291 to 176. They argued the affirmative on the resolution that the American Written Constitution is a hindrance rather than a safeguard for social progress.
Des Moines freshman Helois Martin and Bagley senior Darwin Kinney top Drake campus vote by fraternities and sororities. Miss Martin joined Drake last January after six months with a Hollywood act in New York featuring Rudy Vallee.
District Judge D W Jackson ruled the 1950 assessment against the estate of J J Rancom, former American Trust and Savings Bank president, improper. The case sought over $1,000,000 in back taxes for 1926 to 1928, involving property, moneys and credits.

Secretary Cordell Hull issued a sharp warning to exporters of oil copper trucks scrap iron and other commodities that selling these items to Italy violates US policy. He said such trade conflicts with the neutrality act and noted the government is watching export trends to Italy and Ethiopia.
The Presbyterian Men's Brotherhood will hear Rev. J Remwick McCullough of Cedar Rapids Westminster Presbyterian Church at 6 30 Monday evening in the local Presbyterian church. The Washington Townsend club No. 1 was chartered today, becoming a full unit backing the Townsend movement for old age pensions. About 120 charter members, with William James president, Dave Donovan vice president, and J A Sutton secretary treasurer, attended a meeting at the courthouse where 150 people gathered. Walter Collins of Burlington spoke on the movement’s aims to relieve distress and improve times, and Mr Taylor discussed Dr F E Townsend’s career. A second club meeting is planned in about two weeks.
Mr and Mrs Clarence Losan and Mr and Mrs Leigh Soule spent last evening in Cedar Rapids calling on friends.
The county Red Cross campaign opened with about 400 members pledging to join and more expected as ward reports come in. Richard Stewart, director, cited Washington city at 367 members so far with dollars indicating memberships. Ward results show mixed progress versus last year while county totals await delayed reports.

Granger Iowa November 15 Fifty families prepare to occupy new federal subsistence homestead in Dallas County. One fourth mile east of Granger 60 modern houses on plots two to eight acres each will provide self sustaining homes for miners and families. Homes include four to six rooms with basement well septic tank bath furnace electric pump and garage. Transmission lines by Des Moines and Central Railway Co. expected to finish soon. Project conceived by Rev Louis G Ligut hur Catholic priest and approved by Roosevelt era New Deal program. Fifty of 1000 applicants selected. forty two miners families among the chosen. Homes built last summer by ore miners from local area.
London reports the British national government winning a safe majority in parliament with 308 seats. Labour gains but liberals fall back while Labour gains come from multiple parties including the conservatives. former Labour leader J Ramsey MacDonald loses standing amid coalition tensions.
Marion township board members said the creek bridge damaged yesterday in an accident is minor and can be repaired at small cost. The small bridge was broken when a Clarence Phillips coal truck passed over it with no injuries reported.
Washington reports the United States and Canada will sign a reciprocal trade agreement at 3 30 p m with Secretary of State Cordell Hull and Premier Mackenzie King present. The accord is framed as a major, swift diplomatic achievement following King’s ten day visit and two days of talks with President Roosevelt.
Lester H Orr, a Washington real estate man, becomes councilman at large succeeding James Morrow. He will serve until the March 1937 city election. The council also approved surfacing 3.36 miles of streets by Horrabin Construction and accepted a US grant to finance a sewer and pumping station.
Miss Agnes Samuelson state Superintendent of Public Instruction reversed the Perry school board and Dallas county action dismissing Walter Clark as Perry superintendent. She ruled he had not received a full fair hearing on charges of improper conduct with women instructors in the Perry schools.
Two cars collided near the southwest corner of the square at about two this afternoon. Marion Wells of west of town drove east on West Washington Street while Mort Chance in a Model T attempted a left turn onto South Marion Avenue. The Wells car struck Chance’s car, breaking the right rear wheel and running board and puncturing a radiator. no one was injured.
The city advances formalities to begin western town construction with a federal grant of 9,818 dollars, covering 45 percent of the project cost.
President Roosevelt backs the American Automobile Association drive to reduce highway deaths and injuries. In a letter to Thomas Q. Henry of Detroit he urges support for legislation enforcement and education to boost safety on roads and highways.

Cedar Rapids police report counterfeit twenty dollar notes circulating across Cedar Rapids Waterloo Fort Dodge Mason and other cities. The bills bear the serial number B32288534A and look authentic to untrained eyes per state radio broadcast.
A jury in Bis marsh North Dakota found no verdict in the William Langer relief funds case. The former governor and three associates faced charges of soliciting funds for political purposes. The jury was discharged after reporting a disagreement. Vie Westphal was noted as being in Des Moines on business.
Fred Stow, manager of the McLellan store, is a native of Indiana. His home originally was at Elkhart. After high school he declined Purdue University to work instead. About a year later he joined the McLellan organization and has remained with them since.
