Dr Walter Scott Athern 62 longtime religious educator and author and former Iowan died in a St Louis hotel Tuesday night after a heart attack. He was born July 25 1872 in Marengo Iowa and served as president of Oklahoma City University.
State fish and game commission discussed restoring Lake Manawa near Council Bluffs. The plan would shrink the lake to 3230 acres by building interior dikes and using dredged material as fill, involving dredging about a million cubic yards of dirt.
A proposal before the Iowa emergency relief committee envisions a full rebuild and rearrangement of Camp Dodge over five to ten years to create a premier army center. Work has begun with about 200 workers from the federal transient center grading the parade ground.
The University of Iowa reports 542 needy students receive 7680 dollars monthly in federal work relief funds. The program, under Harry L. Hopkins head of the Emergency Relief Administration, requires the work to be socially useful.

Charles F Mayer 61 died after a five month illness. Funeral services are set for Saturday at two at the Mayer home three miles south of Wellman. He was a prominent farmer born near Wellman, survived by wife Jennie Dodds, son Paul, brothers William and Frank, sister Mrs Newton Romine, and was active in the Methodist church.

In Darien Connecticut three men were captured by police in a mansion owned by Gustave W. Westheim after a failed kidnapping attempt on his twelve year old son Robert. A telephone warning prompted Mrs Westheim to place the boy in hiding. shot were exchanged with officers as the culprits tried to flee. Suspects identified as John Collins Joseph Korg and Lu Rowe.
