Bankers estimate Iowans will receive more than 1 million dollars in Christmas savings club payments soon. Most funds are expected to be used for Christmas gifts as clubs began for that purpose. National Christmas club figures reach about 370 million dollars.
Roy Barber of Emerson was dead Tuesday and her husband was seriously ill from gas produced by a coal stove. The couple had installed a new stove Monday in their home behind a shoe repair shop they opened at Emerson, eight miles west of here, two months ago. They formerly lived at Glenwood.
De Molays will take over Muscatine on Wednesday November 21 and run the city for the day. Don Schmidt will be mayor for the day with Henry Kemper heading the police department and Neal Estes directing the fire department. Robert Crow, city attorney, will settle legal matters for the day.
Federal relief officers urge Creston residents to act on a May vote to approve bonds totaling 204.60 dollars to purchase and develop the private water plant for the city’s supply.
Muscatine school nurse Miss Margaret Gill reports in October four measles cases and an increasing trend this month. The board of education hearing notes five chickenpox cases one whooping cough case and eight pediculosis cases, totaling 194 communicable diseases among pupils.
In Des Moines Gov. Clyde L. Herring suspended the life sentence of Quan Sue, convicted of murdering Sing Lee during an attempted robbery in Story County on Sept. 21, 1917. The suspension is solely to permit deportation proceedings.
The upper Mississippi River was closed Tuesday as the steam tow James BR. Good passed southbound from St. Paul with the season’s last barge tow. The Wake-Robin government fire boat followed, removing buoys from the channel for winter.
Dr. Otto Clesne Webster county coroner said an autopsy will determine the cause of Elizabeth Habbah, a 14 year old junior high pupil who fell dead unexpectedly though she was in good health, according to relatives.
Sioux City report of a 20 year old hitch hiker Gordon Anderson of Alcester South Dakota killed by ammonia fumes in a refrigerator truck driven by Lawrence Pierson of Alcester. His body found when the truck arrived in Sioux City Iowa.
A surprise ceremony at a regular drill honored Capt Oral J. Brown of Troop F 113th Cavalry with a service medal marking ten years in the Iowa National Guard. Major C J Lambert of Sigourney presented the medal noting Brown’s WWI service and five years as Washington troop commander since October 1929.
Iowa officials announce the second slice of 75 million in corn hog payments for 1934 will begin, with 28 counties certified to Washington. Checks will be half the contract benefits plus one dollar per hundred pounds on hogs, and the third payment is due around February 1. Error rates found by checkers remain low as county records are rechecked.
Don Sherman, president of the Washington Y M C C A for ten years, will be general chairman of the annual campaign to support the Y next Tuesday November 2. Clarence Logan is campaign secretary and the finance committee includes Orville Elder SS W Livingston Leslie Dunlap and Don Sherman. Ward captains Roger Sherman John Winga Carl Hedges and Claude Tucker lead canvass teams meeting at 7:30 AM for breakfast at the Y before distributing carts and lists in a one day drive.
The junior college Little Theater presents The Detour in a single-scene set featuring a house interior porch and outdoor view. Performances run tonight and tomorrow night with the curtain at 8 p m. The play’s Iowa origin is noted as a standout past production.
Mr and Mrs George White of Cedar Reards visited here yesterday with Mr and Mrs Harry C Ward. The gathering reflected familiar ties among area families as residents welcomed travelers and shared notes of local life.

J. A. Marsh of Ainsworth is named by the county board of supervisors as a member of the county old age assistance board. He replaces R. K. Ferguson of West Chester who resigned. Other members include H. G. Richardson and Miss Marian Baker. The board oversees the state old age pension law.
Due to widespread corn damage this year the Washington county corn show running November 17 to 24 will disregard damage from corn year worm and mold near ear ends. Rules include eight ears per exhibitor and one oddity entry, judging by section with first prizes of $1.75 and $1. The sweepstakes prize offers $10 and $5 cash, plus a traveling cup.
Governor Clyde L. Herring led Dan W. Turner by 88 votes in the recent statewide canvass. County auditor Misa Ethel Grecian disclosed the official figures after rechecking the board of supervisors canvass, noting a net loss of 99 from unofficial returns. Putnam gains 61, Morrison up 102, while several state and local races show minor shifts in official totals.
Des Moines report says the State Anti-Saloon League headquarters committee repudiates the liquor commission for opening stores in East Des Moines and Iowa City. It outlines a 1956 program demanding damages liability for liquor, local option to ban sales, and prohibition of beer where meals are served. Dr. E A High notes aims target the 1936 assembly.
Speidel heads a seven man field crew under John Speidel to curb bootleg coal truckers who skip the two percent retail sales tax. The effort targets independent truckers selling coal directly to users, with checks on mines in Iowa and nearby Illinois and Missouri.

The Federal Commerce Commission ordered a broad inquiry into American Telephone and Telegraph and its Bell partners and subsidiaries. Public hearings begin after January first to explore corporate history finance management and related contracts with Western Electric and license agreements. Findings may support a later congressional report and potential rate investigations.
MATULLA NOV 15 Four persons were known dead and seven missing after a typhoon hit the eastern part of Luzon island. Initial damage estimates rise hourly as provinces report 20 000 homeless in one province and 5 000 in another. Damage already exceeds 2 000 000 with fishing craft missing and hundreds of homes wrecked. A large death toll is expected.
C. A. Neiswanger served as installing officer with B. Burham and Bernard Walker assisting. Dale Atkinson installed officers for the Fairfield post while several comrades from the area attended. The Washington county post and its Auxiliary plan a joint installation Tuesday evening November 20 with Fairfield members visiting.
A Christian church launched a series of monthly church night programs with a reception for new members. Rev. Vernon Hs juvter presided, and speakers including Leslie Dunlap and Dr. I. BP, Telfor addressed membership and responsibilities. About 45 attendees enjoyed musical preludes, a duet by Rev. and Mrs. Car, and refreshments.
