Wheat prices on the Chicago board rose to session highs as buying surged near the close. Corn oats and rye followed the wheat gains with modest climbs amid favorable news from Liverpool Australia and Russia boosting trader confidence.
Observances marking the 25th anniversary of the laymen's missionary movement took place yesterday in the Methodist United Presbyterian and Baptist churches. Men’s chorus music accompanied the evening services at the U P and Methodist churches while pastors Rev D C Fulton and Rev A A Wigtz spoke on the movement’s role in foreign missions. Prof J A Taylor gave a brief history at the Methodist service.
Mrs. T. L. Brookhart county Red Cross chair reports 460 memberships for the next year from Washington with more expected as team captains finish reports. Last year 588 joined. current numbers near that figure despite finances. People missed by solicitors can join at Washington National Bank with a one dollar annual fee.
Brig Gen Park A Findley announced orders to move the Iowa National Guard to Fairfield to protect state veterinarians conducting tuberculin tests in Jefferson county. About 600 guardsmen under Gen Findley will camp at Chautauqua Grounds as testing aims to cover roughly 62% of Jefferson county cattle herds under militia protection.
The Knights of Columbus of Washington and the Catholic Order of Foresters of Richmond plan a euchre tournament in Richmond Sunday evening in response to an invitation from the Foresters. The Ninth district Knights meeting scheduled for Monday Nov 23 is postponed to December. The local Knights regular meeting on Nov 23 is moved to Tuesday night Nov 24 due to the Governor's visit.
Western trunk line carriers petition the Interstate Commerce Commission to reopen hearings on the commission's Western class rates decision. The move comes as they request further examination of rate structures and implications for freight charges.
A grand jury indicted Mr. and Mrs. Harry N. Riley on maltreatment and torture of 12 year old Edith Riley. The girl, identified as a prisoner in a closet for several years, is the stepdaughter of Mrs. Riley. The case stems from alleged years of abuse.
The November meeting of the Better Washington club is scheduled for Friday evening at the Y M C A. Dinner begins at 6 15 to allow time for the program and business meeting followed by an early adjournment for members who wish to watch the football game.
D C Kilgore traveled to Briton today. The readable notes place Victor and Walter Oecetjen in Oskaloosa on Sunday and mention Kilgore’s trip to Brigh ton.
Walter Oetjen manager of the Washington Independents announced the football game with Fairfield will be played Wednesday night at Case field with the same lineup as before. A workout will be held at the Troop F cavalry drill field and proceeds go to the local unemployment relief committee.
At Kansas City Mo on November 16 the American Royal Livestock and Horse Show hosted junior division events. Iowa State College team led by Ray mond H Smith and Joseph R Caputo topped the livestock judging contest with 4544 points, edging Michigan State Nebraska Kansas State Oklahoma A and M and Missouri in order. Caputo was high scorer, with Nebraska and Missouri next.
The heaviest snow storm of the season hit Idaho, grounding mail planes and delaying trains. A southbound airmail flight from Idaho Falls turned back due to blinding snow, landing safely at Idaho Falls, while a northbound flight remained grounded and rail traffic to Pocatello ran behind schedule.
The League of Nations proclaimed a one year armament truce effective November 1. Forty five signatures have been received to the truce including the United States.
Thornton, driver for H. and A. bakery, was hospitalized in Sigourney after his truck overturned twice down a twelve foot embankment near Highway 149 and No. 2. He suffered a scalp injury and blood loss but was expected to leave in a day or two. The crash damaged pies and cookies. a passing car forced the truck off the road, causing the accident.
The Rock Island stockyards are being enlarged to twice their size to handle growing business. Rock Island depot agent Lewis Goodlander notes weekly livestock shipments of 25–30 cattle cars and 35–40 hog cars, with 20 hog cars sent to Chicago on Saturday night. Two carpenters, Frank Duncan and Chris Maddin, are performing the expansion work.
Theodore Dreiser and John Dos Passos, noted authors, were indicted by a Kentucky grand jury on charges of criminal syndicalism. The action was announced from Middleboro on November 16.
A quadruple funeral was planned for mother Cleo Arnote and three of her children Dean Marie Bobby after a fire at their Polo area farm home. Father Arnote and daughter Pauline suffered severe burns and were treated in a Kansas City hospital. The family had lived near Polo for three years after moving from Iowa.
Francis A Bannerup a well known Coppoock resident died suddenly this morning at 10 30 at his home after a brief illness He was about 50 years old and a railway employee He leaves his mother and a brother in the community.
United Press correspondent Frederick Kuh reports from Tsitsihar where General Ma Chan-Shan declares he will fight to the death against Japanese forces in northern Manchuria. Ma argues China lacks aid from Soviet Russia and seeks League of Nations intervention as fighting intensifies near Nanai and Angangxi.
Jill Rogers reports from Beverly Hills that editors from across the country flood the area, with Vice President Curtis roaming studios. She notes tension over potential war, insisting current violence is rehearsal and any deaths would not count.
Ted Newberry a Chicago public enemy and Capone lieutenant leads 29 others in a federal trial in Peoria on conspiracy to violate prohibition law. Separate dispatches note Chinese wartime appeals and wounded arriving at a primitive hospital in Tsitaihar with Chinese doctors tending the injured.
The League of Nations council meets in Paris for a pivotal test to halt the Chinese Japanese struggle in Manchuria. In Mukden Henry Pu Yi, the former boy emperor, is said to be hiding as a plan to crown him wanes. Refugees in Harbin fear bombardment as Japanese forces push toward Anganchi and Tsitsihar along the Nanni river.
