A Des Moines businessman named Cheney Prouty, president of the Prouty Bowler Soap Co, was awarded one of the prizes in Younker Brothers semi annual dress making contest. He makes dresses and knits as a hobby.
The Jesup part-time school enters its fourth year with Glenn Miller as president. Members are recent high school graduates. The year will feature talks on Feeds and Feeding Farm Animals and Agricultural Law.
Rudolph Eggena aged 27 suffered a complete amputation of his right arm just below the shoulder while shelling corn on his father’s farm in Rockford. He was rushed to a local hospital for emergency treatment.
Ames Iowa State college will send 87 head of livestock to the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago from November 26 to December 3. The entry includes 20 fat steers 29 breeding sheep and 38 fat hogs, led by P S Shearer head of the animal husbandry department.
Beautiful chrysanthemums, buried in snow, remain vibrant and admired. Mrs. Roy Eck gathers a quart of strawberries, while Slumboldt homegrown berries and garden flowers are still being picked locally.
President Lb. Vo Kime of Western Union College announced an endowment from Amanda Dubbs of Harrisburg Penn totaling 25500 in stocks and bonds. Income from the endowment will support education of students entering Evangelical ministry.
Delvin H. Phend reported a three-pound carrot he grew in his Iowa City garden. The carrot measured seven inches long and four inches across the top, an unusually large vegetable for a home plot.
Burlington workers part of a group of 189 storm troops from the Midwest who traveled to New Hampshire to repair damage caused by September storms. The team included several linemen from Burlington and helped restore telephone lines and service after the disaster.
Four boys with an air rifle stopped the fast eastbound Rocky Mountain Limited as it slowed through Davenport. The engineer saw them ahead and halted the train a few feet away. Police confiscated the gun and ordered the youths to report to officials Saturday.
Robert Brown aged 26 died from injuries after moving a small frame building on a truck near a bridge on the east edge of Harlan. He was guiding a brace when a car driven by John White struck the building, ejecting a plank into Brown's stomach.
Eleven oil gas coal and lumber cars derail three miles east of Floris and catch fire. Thick black smoke rises for miles as railroad officials estimate losses exceed 50000 dollars. The blaze roars and metal cars warp from the heat.
Investigators search Mrs. Mabel Trow Knox home for possible extra victims in the Knox case as shovels turn soil. The body of 86 year old Lucinda Trow was found in a coffin made from a kitchen cabinet. authorities pursue a missing elderly woman and Sumner Knox, her husband, while Mrs. Knox is held in protective custody and to be moved to Woodbury county jail.
Washington sources say Army and Navy defense experts urge Roosevelt to seek two billion dollars next year to equip a 400000 man army and 4 million reserve force, doubling last year’s defense outlay. Plan calls for 2300 plus front line air planes, more navy planes, tanks, anti tank guns, gas masks, munitions, and rapid industrial shift to war production.
Miss Anna Henderson longtime Iowa State College art teacher in Ames died at 5:30 p.m. in the college hospital. Born in Washington on September 20, 1874 she studied at local schools Rockford College in Illinois and Columbia University New York. She taught art at Ames since leaving Columbia and was active in clubs and radio lectures. She leaves a half brother Dr Richard Henderson and a sister Miss Jennie Henderson.
Two vehicles collided on Primary Road No 2 at the west edge of Ainsworth. Dr C K Bassler of Ainsworth was driving one car and was rear ended by John L Dooley of DeWitt Iowa 24 years old. Bassler suffered bruises while Mildred Walker 22 of DeWitt was bumped on the forehead. Both cars sustained heavy damage.
The Washington Phalanx chapter traveled to Cedar Rapids for the noon banquet at the Midwest regional Y's Men conclave and installed the Cedar Rapids Alpha chapter. Participants included Merle Warner Primus Wayne Kendrick Daryl Fetters Don Roger Gene Trask James Birney Lynn Hebron Charles Morris Shrum Lewis and Dick McIntosh. Attendees from Washington were Mr and Mrs John Tomlin Jr Mrs Lewis Warren Ted Brown Harry Sizer Bob McFarlane Dave Elder and Leigh Soule. Warren chaired a convention session.
The obituary notes the deceased woman had a half brother Dr. George Henderson a physician in West Chester and lists her church affiliations in Ames between Presbyterian Episcopal and her Washington membership in the Nineteenth Century club. She joined the Tri Delta sorority.
CIO leader John L. Lewis opened the convention in Pittsburg with a warning to critics that labor safety for the land depends on the CIO. He denounced an overwhelming tidal wave of criticism and urged government and people to support the organization.
Internationally known labor prisoner Tont Mooney had another appeal rejected by the U S Supreme Court seeking a rehearing on a prior denial. His hopes now rest on a pardon from California Governor elect Culbert Olson who has signaled Mooney’s innocence in the wartime preparedness day bombings in San Francisco.
A hay loft fire at the Walter Crawford farm near Washington destroyed a barn and its contents early this afternoon. Justin North saw smoke and the barn explode as flames spread to a straw stack and corn field. A North truck, a tractor, hay, oats, and fencing were damaged. insurance covered by Farmers Mutual.
John L Meeker aged 68 died at his Riverside home. Former Washington resident, he had been in ill health since last Friday and suffered a serious illness prior. Funeral services will be Tuesday at ten at Riverside church with Dr F W Eastwood of Washington officiating. Interment at Ottumwa. Survived by wife Lilly Knox Meeker a daughter Mrs Tony Stransky two brothers Ley Roy W Meeks and Edward Meeker and one granddaughter Nope Stransky. He belonged to the Ottumwa Presbyterian church.
Manuel Carassa, a Peruvian mine owner, completed a 4 675 mile air race from Lima to Rochester. He arrived at Mayo Clinic with gallstone complications and, upon arrival, surgeons prepared for possible surgery to save his life.
A group of Iowa Wesleyan college students will appear in West Chester Iowa on the evening of November 15 for a program of music and speaking. Participants include Florence Lindeen Margaret Hall Wilme Stevens Hall Weir and Edward Roberts with speakers Clifford Manning and James Sloen. Pastor Rev. George Pennington leads the church activities during Fellowship Week for young church members.
Leroy Ham lin, 16, a Thompson High School student, was accidentally shot and killed when a gun leaning against a car went off. He was helping tie loads for a flat car and had brought the gun to hunt. Son of Chris Hamlin, Rock Island section foreman at Thompson.
Fire at the J W Longer farm five miles southeast of town destroyed the machine shop building and most contents. The residence was spared thanks to the fire department led by Harvey Meek. Damage included tools, farm machinery, and seed. insured by Farmers Mutual Insurance. The blaze started around ten o'clock Sunday morning, reportedly from a blowtorch.
In New York on November 12 an INS report cites Thomas E. Dewey Alfred E. Smith and Fiorello La Guardia condemning Nazi anti Jewish actions as barbaric. Dewey warns of organized plots to crush Jews and the burning of synagogues and churches while appealing to world opinion to prevent spread of such barbarism.
Kellogg Co of Battle Creek Michigan secured Supreme Court relief to reverse a lower court ruling that barred use of the trade name shredded wheat for a pillow shaped biscuit. Justices McReynolds and Butler dissented.
