A column notes Manola Delta Delta Delta Sorority and Theta Kappa Nu fraternity won first place in house decorating at Simpson College homecoming. Winning floats were prepared by Alpha Chi Omega sorority and Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Anthony Rader of Pulaski will be an honored guest at an open house today in the Stockham buildings. The event is sponsored by the Masons and Eastern Stars to celebrate his centennial milestone.
Burlington resident Oran Corman brought three bunches of Sen. Dunlap strawberries to the Hawkeye Gazette office. He notes the berries include green and ripe fruit and says this variety normally bears in spring, making the late fall harvest unusual.
Mrs P. E. Burgess sustained head and neck wounds while hunting with her husband near Centerville. She was admitted to St. Joseph's hospital with non serious injuries. Burgess, a store manager, did not see his wife partly hidden by brush as he fired at a home frame with a shotgun.
Des Moines union organizer Ted Beebe suffered a neck injury after his car left the road and rolled over between Des Moines and an unspecified location. Ives said Beebe fell asleep at the wheel before being taken to Iowa Methodist Hospital.
ALTOONA One vote re elected L. H. Walters Altoona as constable of Clay township and retained the title Polk counties busiest man. Walters received one vote Tuesday for two year term. no other votes were cast making him the winner. Walters is superintendent of the Altoona water works and serves as streets commissioner town marshal night marshal and parks caretaker.
In Baylor township two rivals for justice of the peace each received 502 votes in the Tuesday election. Ted Schlenker and C H Spangler will both serve as the office has two justices per township. The tie occurs in Des Moines area Baylor township races.
Rev Charles Winters 57 died at his Wayland home after a year of poor health. Former pastor at Letts and Cottonwood United Brethren churches he moved to Wayland a year ago. Survived by wife Grace and three daughters Mrs Neff Mrs La of Iowa City and Mae Win Stillson. sister Mrs Corning Sioux Falls. brothers Ed Mason polis and John Mason. Funeral at Cottonwood United Brethren church with Interment Cottonwood cemetery. Born February 15 1881 near Des Moines. Married 1894?
Iowa's new Republican legislature faces numerous questions for January session. Expected issues include maintaining sales and income taxes, distribution of funds for old age pensions and relief, including county allocations, and debates over homestead exemptions. Proposals target liquor legality, education administration reforms, unemployment compensation, and venereal disease testing for marriage licenses.
In Washington, Rep. John W. Martin leads Republicans in urging a comprehensive investigation of the WPA and Administrator Harry Hopkins. Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg calls for profit sharing by industry with employees and chairs a Senate committee hearing set for November 21. The special panel will sample industry reactions and existing cooperative profit plans.
In Le Mars Iowa authorities launched a search for Mrs. L A Trow a civil war pensioner missing from her home The Plymouth County Sheriff received authority to dig for the woman in the vicinity Miss Maybelle Knox who lived with Mrs Trow confessed to signing the pension checks and was detained by the sheriff The case prompted an investigation into possible concealment or burial near the residence.
Negotiations to reopen the Swift packing plant in Sioux City remained deadlocked after a meeting between company and CIO officials. Spokesmen offered no progress details, and the company gave no timeline for reopening. The plant reopening had been canceled earlier in the week at Governor Kraschel’s request, with National Guard troops present to maintain peace during the packing employees strike. Melvin J. Saforek and Dolores H. Kelley of Kalona obtained a marriage license today.
The Leon Beatty post of the American Legion Auxiliary held its annual Armistice Banquet honoring 1917 18 veterans with a Ray Murray Des Moines address. Washington high school orchestra provided music and Taps honored war dead, listing dozens of local soldiers by name.
Cecil Replogle, 17, faces possible loss of his right eye after a fight with William Crandall, 18, near the high school. Crandall is held to district court on an assault charge after allegedly breaking a car window and injuring Replogle. Crandall appeared before Justice J. B. Royee and waived preliminary hearing. The Replogle family lives northeast of town on a Stewart farm.
Mrs. Robert Moore aged 89 died this morning at 9 45 at her home northwest of Washington after a short illness. Funeral services were set for two o clock Monday at Sherman’s funeral home under Dr. F W Westwood with burial in Enid Oklahoma. Born Louisa McMahon at Franklin Ohio on July 12 1849 she married Robert Moore in Terre Haute Indiana in 1870 and moved to Washington remaining there most of her married life. She is survived by four children Mrs Martha Collar J W Moore and H R Moore of Washington.
Germany fines half a million Jews a billion marks for Ernst von Rath murder in Paris. The penalty targets Jewish economic status as anti Jewish laws tighten. Berlin reports ban on weapons for Jews and broader restrictions loom.
Two people are dead and five missing after a fire swept two hotels and four other buildings in Rouyn Quebec on November 12. Fifty guests escaped. three were hospitalized with injuries. Fire crews battled the blaze through the night, with authorities investigating the cause.

Three tularemia cases linked to rabbits on a farm near Ainsworth were reported by Dr. D C Barrett. The victims W O Moberly, his wife, and Clarence Witrout contracted the illness after handling infected rabbits from November 7. Prevention centers on avoiding contact with animals and wearing rubber gloves when dressing rabbits.
