The University of Iowa hosts its twenty fifth annual clinic with Dr. Ernest Irons and Dr. Vernon David of Rush Medical College as speakers. The clinic runs until Saturday noon to acquaint Iowa physicians with late medical developments.
Workmen dig a ditch eight miles between here and Boone county home northwest. A four inch pipe will carry city water to the institution. Project cost set at $62,000 with $10,000 paid by the county and the rest financed by the federal government.
A 10 dollar check issued on Farmers and Merchants Bank of Lenox, dated over six years past, was found under a counter at Wood Hull Bakery Creston. It bears the signature of Thomas Howie and is payable to Thomas Ferguson.
A man recovered in a Muscatine hospital after being overcome by carbon monoxide at his parents home in South Muscatine. Neighbors found him on the garage floor near a car exhaust with the garage doors closed.
University of Iowa students will have Thanksgiving day off and a 17 and a half day Christmas vacation. Classes resume by 8 am January 1 after departure at noon December 18.
District Judge John P. Tinley signed an order holding the new Screeno game lawful. Assistant Atty Gen Walter Maley had contended it was not legal but the judge ruled participation does not require a purchase and thus it is not a lottery.
Centerville reports that coal prices vary inversely with temperature. W W Moore Independent Coal Producers proposes raising price to 2 75 dollars when mercury drops to zero and to 3 00 dollars if temperatures fall further, at a meeting of producers.
Newton Orie Cook driving a caterpillar tractor along a road near Killduff looked back and did not see Harold Lanp hier parked car. The tractor climbed over the car smashing the top and wrecking it. Police or local authorities investigated the incident.
A small ear of corn, likely 400 years old, will be shown at the Little Midwest Horticultural exposition. Carrie Chapman Catt donated the ear to the college. A delegation from the American embassy at Lima unearthed the seed in a burial mound opened by a railroad crew.
More than 200 students from midwest colleges converge on Grinnell for the sixth annual Grinnell student conference on international relations. Grover Clark of Washington, an expert on Far Eastern affairs, tops the speaker list with two lectures titled The Balance Sheet of Imperialism and Storm Over Asia.
G men tracing escape from North Carolina prison captured Reese Bailey, a bank robber who had escaped March 22, 1934. He was wounded three times in a farm raid 19 miles from Chillicothe, as EB Connolly led Cincinnati district officers aided by Jackson County and Chillicothe police.
Firemen responded to a morning blaze at the Tom Dowis residence on East Third Street. A chimney spark ignited the kitchen roof, burning a hole about a foot by a half square. The flame was extinguished quickly with a small amount of water.
Keokuk Iowa reports the death of G H Goldsberry at age 85 or 86, once described as Keokuk’s last Civil War veteran. The obituary notes his long service and place of death, with INS dispatches confirming the veteran’s passing.
Washington county officials announce arrival of 1937 license plates at the courthouse. 56,400 car plates and 650 truck plates are issued with white numbers on blue, replacing blue-on-white year. 5,371 car plates and 655 trucks are in use for 1936, with 34 transfers of used cars recorded this week.
J. F. North saw his truck fully destroyed by fire Wednesday night as he drove southeast of town near the Ben Bruegge place. A load of straw was on the vehicle at the time, and the origin of the blaze appeared to be while he was driving.
Everett Green of the Lexington community was injured while harvesting soybeans when he fell from a tractor and was pulled into the power take off. He suffered a fractured pelvic bone, cuts, and bruises and was admitted to Washington County Hospital in serious condition with an expected six week hospital stay.
The Mitchell farm barn three and a half miles northeast of Crawfordsville burned in the morning blaze. Fred Mitchell suffered severe burns when his clothes caught fire while fueling a car as flames consumed winter feed, machinery, and horses trapped inside before help arrived. Insurance was expected to cover much of the loss.
At about eight o'clock in the evening Mr North observed flames and considered the blaze may have begun from a cigarette or another source. The loss was partially covered by insurance.
Iowa observers expect a stormy 1937 legislative session with a GOP majority looming in the senate and a near-even house. Close six district races hint at contested results and a tight power balance. Kraschel’s election as governor adds to the potential for bitter battles over major issues.
After canvassing the general election, county auditor Miss Ethel Greelan reports Washington County voters favored an amendment to end the state census taken every year ending in five. The county tally was 4 044 for and 3 186 against, a sizable vote against the change despite no organized effort to oppose it.
Judge P J Siegers of Newton who has held court here for days went to Sigourney to hear cases and will return next Monday to resume the November term in Washington county. Jury cases were to start Monday afternoon but many were settled or continued leaving possible one trial. Two divorces were granted this week Catherine C Troutman of Wellman from Delbert W Troutman and Mildred Leota Hazen from John Donald Hazen.

Judge Oscar Grow of Atlan ta Missouri will judge the forthcoming Washington County fall poultry show to be held Wednesday through Saturday. He is renowned across the central and western United States for poultry and waterfowl judging and will assist exhibitors with flock improvement discussions. Open exhibits, 9 A M judging Thursday the 19th, quilts expected, 4 H Club classes added, entry fees unchanged.
The A M E church revival continues nightly next week at 7 30 p m except Saturday with Mrs Smith in charge. Rev W H Berry notes remarkable attendance this week and hopes it increases during the final week before closure.
Reuben Heindel a retired farmer of Columbus City township died at 2 am at his home in Columbus City after several weeks illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Sunday at home conducted by Rev. Harry Busse of Morley. Heindel born June 9 1860 near Columbus City was married March 22 1881 to Emma Hanft. Surviving are his widow three daughters Mrs Samuel D James Columbus Junction Mrs Cecil Lowe Letts and Mrs Manford Rabenold Ainsworth plus several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. W. G. Oleson a 48 year old church worker from Northwood Iowa died in a hospital from severe burns after a kerosene stove exploded in her cabin trailer in Audubon. She was cooking supper when flames enveloped her and passersby aided her before her transport to hospital.
Dr W D Dwyer has moved from the Bailey building third floor to new suites on the north side of the square opposite Morrison law offices over the Graham store. Miss Velda Parcell, known in Washington, will join Monday. The remodeling completes mid next week and the office will open Monday.
Washington school authorities invite all residents to the high school tonight at 7 30 for a public meeting marking American Education week. Charles F Miller of Albia will speak, with high school music and an open house to follow. 58 teachers will be present to meet patrons and parents.
President Roosevelt disclosed that he asked the federal reserve board and the treasury to study heavy foreign buying in the American securities market. It was hinted that Congress may be asked to curb foreign investment past a certain point to protect international exchange.

Joe Staebell the state conductor of automobile driver examinations says chauffeurs must renew by January first or retake tests. Lloyd Bagley and Mr Staebell are in Washington for weekly exams. today only three applicants appeared before noon.

Mrs Kiamouty, 62, a native of Swisher Iowa founded by her grandfather Benjamin Swisher, died near here. The Swisher lineage traced to Benjamin Swisher, highlighting the family’s local roots.
