Bloomfield Retail Merchants Association will serve cider and doughnuts to all visitors this Saturday. This kickoff marks the first of a series of fall and winter trade days inviting local shoppers and guests to the town.
Iowa City star Ozzie Simmons said he would report for practice and be ready to play Purdue on Saturday after a conference with Prof. Co M Updegraff, Iowa board of athletics chairman, who had announced plans to quit the team yesterday.
Seventeen young men who vandalized several outbuildings on Halloween night in Fort Dodge are now rebuilding the damaged structures as their penalty.
Spencer Alfred James Livingston, 84, a farmer and lifelong Democrat, died in his hometown. He was noted for a 1928 campaign incident when Vice President Charles Curtis reputedly snapped at him during a speech, remarking you’re too damned dumb to understand after Livingston heckled Curtis.
Town State college broadcasting station WOI abruptly cut into loudspeakers then went silent. Station manager Andy Woolfries explained the crew blew three tubes at once, more than the usual single-tube failure, during the interrupted transmission.
The Drakesville Lumber Co yards in Drakesville were swept by a fire of unknown origin causing about 10000 in losses. The blaze threatened the town but was checked after help from Bloomfield and Ottumwa fire departments.
A coroner's jury found Rex Lowe of Gilmore City died from an accidental shooting. Dean Ballenger, editor of the Gilmore City Enterprise, was cleaning his gun when he tossed it onto a table. the weapon discharged, killing Lowe.
The American Legion drum and bugle corps of Iowa will hold a field day at the University of Iowa on Saturday with an expected 500 attendees. Before the Iowa Purdue game the corps will drill for two trophies and a Hawkeye board plaque. Posts from Davenport Burlington Independence Grinnell and Moline Ill invited the 26 posts in town with drum and bugle corps.
Harry Gibbs a 21 year old farm youth is free on 300 dollars bond on assault charges. If 15 year old June Orr dies the charge could become more serious. Gibbs says he fired to scare away intruders near the John Gibbs farm after mistaking an auto-load of no goods for a threat. The shotgun wound to the girl’s cheek led to lockjaw and extended her illness.
A regional office of the Federal Social Security Act has been set up in Minneapolis within the post office building to administer Iowa Minnesota Nebraska and the Dakotas. Fred M. Wilcox is named regional director. Tax questions go to the Des Moines IRS collector and old age pension inquiries to Byron G. Allen.
Yeggs blasted the Ladora postoffice safe and escaped with about $200. The safe was hauled away and found by farmer Matthias Schultz after three explosions between four and five this morning. In Des Moines robbers pried open a cafe safe with a crowbar and fled with $629, still at large.
Repair work on Dr. T. M. Mast's new office rooms is finished. Modern furniture and equipment installed. Dr. Mast recently moved his family to Washington from Ottumwa and now occupies five rooms including a reception, recovery, treatment, consultation, and drug room in 118 South Iowa Avenue behind Miller's footwear store.
Red Cross workers are canvassing the county as the annual roll call begins. Mira Irene Yard, roll call chairman, says reports start tomorrow. Flags were prepared but delayed. county chairman R. S. Sherman notes this year’s drive is highly organized with a goal of 900 members.
Eugene ONeill American playwright won the 1936 Nobel Prize for Literature in Stockholm. He is the second American laureate since 1901 joining Sinclair Lewis who won in 1930. The prize was valued around 40 000 dollars and is expected near that amount this year.
Forms for employer information under the Social Security Act will be mailed from the Washington postoffice next Monday. About 225 forms will go to employers served by the Washington office, to be completed within a week and returned by November 21, 1936. If any eligible employer is omitted, contact the post office to receive blanks.

Excelsior Springs Missouri reports Chairman Louis E. Roddewig of the Iowa state tax board urged raising the state tax levy to three percent and increasing income tax in upper brackets. The statement comes as Iowa officials gather after recent elections.
In Tipton Iowa a $350000 estate left by Henry Iwers to cousins the Vosses was upheld as valid after a six month contest by 17 relatives. The jury took one hour forty minutes to decide the will genuine. Prospects for appeal dimmed as Albert S Osborn declined to testify forgery and privately said the will valid.
Des Moines reports the official canvass from all Iowa counties shows Krachel ahead of Wilson by 2391 votes. The margin secures Krachel’s seating but leaves room for a potential legislative recount.
Riverside locals report visits from Mrs and Mrs Jacob Minick of Washington with Miss Mary Lohberger, and Mr and Mrs Paul Scherrer of Iowa City visiting Mr and Mrs Wesley Prehoda. Lucile Stebbing and her baby, DC, came after her father Sylvester Reiner’s death to stay with Emme Reiner and relatives. Glen Gringer of Hills called on his mother-in-law, Mrs Ruesel Denison, early in the week.
