Hughes to name bipartisan reapportionment group
Gov. Harold E. Hughes said a bipartisan committee of legislators and citizens will be named within a week to draft a new reapportionment plan for the 1965 Iowa Legislature. The panel will include Democrats and Republicans from both houses and may pursue a permanent plan or a temporary one, with sub districting favored by Hughes.

Judy Roland honored as top student saxophonist and All-State invite
Judy Roland, a high school saxophonist from Fairfield, was named outstanding instrumental musician by The School Musician magazine and will appear in the December issue. She earned a solo selection to the All-State Band in Des Moines on Thanksgiving Day after winning over 14 fellow saxophonists. Roland has held top ratings at contests for three years, toured with USA High School Band in 1963, and attended All-State Music Camp at Iowa City before planning to study pharmacy at the State University of Iowa.

Elderly receive most Iowa welfare funds in October
Iowa public assistance totaled 4.91 million dollars in October with senior aid dominant. 27,365 elderly recipients drew 2.54 million, and Aid to Dependent Children served 41,225 people with 1.64 million. Medical aid for seniors rose to 510,634 with 6,695 recipients. Nursing care for age 65 plus cost 773,223 for about 5,700 recipients.

Des Moines reports October was cool and unusually dry across Iowa with many eastern counties receiving no measurable rain. Some towns set records for dryness while Keokuk and Dubuque recorded their driest Octobers in 88 to 104 years.
