John Husske, 46, night foreman at Gambie-Kodmson Kruit Co., held on $8,000 bond after police say he admitted stealing food from the warehouse for months. He allegedly took fruit vegetables and canned goods totaling over $5,000 and used the money on petty purchases.
The Davis MN resentation of state witnesses in the trial of Carl Knox of Sigourney for the murder of his father Walter Knox began Wednesday afternoon in district court. Bert Knox of Sigourney and Sam Knox of Delta testified about Walter Knox, who had been an invalid for several years.
A telegram from U.S. Senator George A. Wilson to Gov. Bourke B. Hickenlooper described Coal Administrator Harold L. Ickes as sympathetic and understanding the Iowa coal situation. He will do all in his power to help. Hickenlooper said he called Wilson to enlist aid in raising the Iowa coal price ceiling.
Leland F. Hammond of Mason City, a 1916 graduate, was sentenced by Federal Judge James A. Donahoe to two years in the penitentiary for violating the selective service act after failing to report for induction. Hammond claimed conscientious objector status.
Donna Jean Mathews, two months old, died in a Burlington house fire that destroyed a two room home. Lois Mathews, four, escaped after lighting a newspaper from the stove started the blaze. Mrs Mathews and another daughter were at a nearby grocery store.
The Women's Christian Temperance Union of Iowa elected Lydia M. Stotts of Marshalltown as president and Maude Morain of Des Moines as vice president. Other officers include Bertha Barber of Denison as corresponding secretary Margaret Gantry of Fort Dodge as recording secretary and Anna Hennings of Des Moines as treasurer during the sixty ninth convention at Capitol Hill Church of Christ.
John Morrell & Co. packing plant in Ottumwa urged hog raisers and shippers to contact due to unusually heavy marketing and a record hog run, signaling high activity at the facility.

President Roosevelt told Congress that despite about 14.0 billion dollars expended on lend-lease none to date meets the value of returns near 2.0 billion. He noted British Commonwealth reverse lend-lease outlay around 1.171 billion with a current 1.25 billion annual rate, and cited Australia 32.8 million and New Zealand 51.0 million spent through June 1943.
Judge Hl. E. Wagner longtime judge in the district including Washington county and an attorney known for many local trials died last night at his Sigourney home. One of his final Washington appearances was at a large Odd Fellows banquet where he spoke and had long been active in lodge affairs.
Henry F. Wagner, 69, former Iowa supreme court justice, died Wednesday night after pneumonia illness. A Sigourney native, he served on the state supreme court 1927 to 1933 and as district judge 1918 to 1926. He studied at Iowa State College of Law and led in Masonic circles. Survived by wife Lillian Wagner and daughter Mrs. J C Eichhorn, two grandchildren. Services planned for 2 p.m. Saturday.

Washington county combine and corn picker owners will be recognized for participation in the 1943 war harvest program. Framed certificates of merit go to combines harvesting 100 acres of beans and pickers handling 150 acres of corn for others. Champion titles come with Our Flag pictures and war bonds or medals.
Moscow dispatch reports the Red army reaching within 90 miles of the old Polish frontier with a westward push toward Kiev as Stalin prepares a winter campaign to push Germans from Ukraine and widen combat on other fronts. The aim appears to be the full liberation of Ukraine with new fronts forming as winter approaches.
Washington county nears its 16 654 goal for the national war fund with 14 736 expected after canvass returns. Iowa township preparers, including eight school districts, promise about 569 50 today or tomorrow, plus 51 50 from Washington yesterday, to reach 14 736. Further reports from seven country districts and 12 canvassers could add 600 to 700 more, cutting the deficit to around 1 000 with future donations and a possible new drive.
A regular meeting of town school superintendents in Washington county was held at Washington high school yesterday evening. All county superintendents attended with their wives, including representatives from Riverside Kalona Wellman West Chester Brighton Crawfordsville Ainsworth and Washington. They enjoyed a potluck.

On the Adriatic front the British 8th Army crosses the Sinella toward the Sangro barrier.
Allied dispatch from Algiers reports German action at Leghorn on the Italian west coast. An obsolete cruiser Quiento and a 330 foot merchantman were scuttled probably blocking harbor entrances, with two 400 foot ships and two smaller vessels moved to the southern harbor approach as blocks. Leghorn lies 160 miles northwest of Rome.
