Col Ralph A Lancaster notes that during December up to half of Iowans drafted will become fathers. He explains the rest will include newly draft eligible youths, those whose classifications changed, and those whose deferments expired.
Davenport men E F Cum mings 44 and John Cacherell 34 spent three hours in Grant s slough two miles north of Princeton after their boat ice cut and sank. Two nearby hunters answered calls for help and spent three hours extricating them. They received first aid in Premeeton. All hunting gear was lost.
Cedar Rapids man Schlieman aged 48 died when the City of Denver stream liner struck his car five miles west of the city. His wife and 11 year old son were injured. the boy was critically hurt with a compound skull fracture. The wife suffered fractures of the collar bone pelvis and a dislocated hip. The car was crushed against freight cars 50 feet from the crossing. the wife was found in a nearby pumphouse and could not explain how she got there. Train damage was slight and it proceeded after a pause.
Governor Bourke Hickenlooper heard from Griffiths Johnson an OPA official in Washington that a price ceiling increase for Iowa coal is under study with a potential 24 hour decision. Iowa miners had returned to work earlier this week without the increase, which is seen as essential to meet the $1.50 wage rise approved by the government.
Des Moines reports Iowa draft delinquents have fallen to a new low of 197, described by Lieut. Col. O. P. Bennet as one of the smallest in the United States. The delinquent rate is about two per 10 000 registrants aged 18 to 38, with locating the men handled by the FBI. Last June there were 234 on the delinquent list and 137 in September 1942. There are 801 000 registrants aged 18 to 65 in the state and 527 188 between
Speaker Sam Rayburn said the new 2.4 billion tax bill with higher excise, corporate, excess profits and postage levies will not be considered on the floor until November 9. The measure must be printed and finalized, delaying the leadership’s plan to bring it up next Monday.
Dr F W Eastwood announces a preaching mission at the Presbyterian church with Rev M A Robeson of Brooklyn as chairman. Dr Harry Finley of Mediapolis will preach at 7 30 PM and a conference is held at four this afternoon followed by a fellowship dinner. Visitors are expected from Sigourney Keota Brighton Bethel Haskins and Crawfordsville.
Attorney T. L. Brookhart condemned isolationism at an Armistice Banquet sponsored by the Leon Beatty post of the American Legion. He warned that greed could ruin peace, urged united action to preserve democracy, and praised the wartime generation while urging caution about postwar policy.
Admiral Chester W. Nimitz told an Armistice Day gathering that victory is near but bitter fighting lies ahead. He said the allies now have the ships, men, and planes and will give the enemy no rest as they move to strike the vitals of Japan. The program included veterans, gold star mothers, and a large Armistice Day banquet in Washington with a turkey supper and group singing.
The 1700 ton U S destroyer Beatty was sunk in the Mediterranean by German planes last Saturday, navy officials reported. Lt. Com. Wiam Outerson of Hollywood, Calif., survived. Casualties were not disclosed, but Beatty's loss raises American naval losses to 129 in this war.
U P Happy and jubilant over his acquittal Count Alfred De Marigny appears unconcerned by a jury verdict that found him not guilty of murdering his father in law Sir Harry Oakes. The panel also recommended his deportation from the Bahamas.
Harry Dodson purchased the John A. Greiner 160 acre home farm for 155 dollars per acre. Greiner will rent the farm to Dodson for 1944 and Fred Dodson of Buffalo Wyoming, son of Harry, will move on the property in March 1945. The farm lies one half mile east of Talleyrand.
President Roosevelt will not mark December 7 with formal observance. He wants the date to be observed by increased effort in work and fighting. The White House disclosed that he plans no recognition of the second anniversary of the entry into war.
A Veterans of Foreign Wars event with Legion cooperation staged eleven aerial bombs in Central Park at eleven yesterday. E R Burham led the display as bombs exploded overhead and a parachute flag opened high above, later found by Mervin Kern at Washington Lumber and Fuel. John Perdock and Bob Noonan Jr. closed with Taps and an echo.
Dr. F W Eastwood presided as Mrs Ward reported 204 people were served including kitchen dining room committees and student servers. A high school band group performed during serving and seating, with their contribution greatly appreciated.
Washington county contributions to the national war fund today totaled 14858.50, reported by county chairman Marion S. George. The county goal is 16654. In Washington the donations today reached 3904 with a town quota of 4000. Women canvassing residences reported 1777.17 and men in the business district 2127.75. George noted 11 solicitors have not yet reported and six school-district workers remain to file reports. Iowa township school districts, previously said to have raised 569, actually turned in 581.25.
A program at the high school drew men and Legionnaires to hear speaker Dave Livingston outline the event. The talk aimed to inform and engage veterans and local residents in discussion at the school venue.

Between 250 and 300 couples attended the Rendezvous event last night raising more than $100 for the fire department death benefit fund now over $1,000. Raymond Yetty of Kalona received the $25 war bond prize while service members were admitted free as guests. Jimmy Smith and his Waterloo band provided the music.
Mrs. Daryl Burham and daughter Barbara Mrs. Don Custer and Oscar Burham were dinner guests yesterday at the Joe Mongan home in Keota.
