Sioux City health officials announce a program paying scarlet fever convalescents five dollars for each eight ounces of blood donated in a city hall test supervised by Health Commissioner W. S. Betty.
Iowa City reports University of Iowa students will enjoy a one day Thanksgiving vacation and a 17% day interlude during the Christmas holidays. The Christmas recess runs from noon December 17 to January 4, the longest on record.
Goldfield Marshall Ras Mussen, 24, was dragged into a corn picker on a farm two miles northwest of here. He suffered a broken arm in three places and severe head and face cuts, according to hospital attendants.
The monthly report by Stewart I. Cain relief director shows higher county spending in October than in September. Cain notes county needs increased as colder weather set in and demand for aid grew.
City officials warn residents after a gypsy fortune teller fleeced several women in Centerville last week, taking more than one dollar from victims. Police urge caution and note the incident is under investigation.
Charles W. Hammond of Cole was hospitalized after his right hand was mangled in a mechanical corn picker. Four fingers were amputated following the accident.

Des Moines reports Wayne Wellman aged 32 and Robert McIroy aged 27, both of Tumw4, along with Leslie O. Ross of the laws board of parole wounded. They are serving at Anamosa Penitentiary for a $1,600 hold up of Leighton Farmers Loan Bank in 1926 and confessed to the crime.
Vere Davis, Kalona banker, was injured yesterday afternoon when two cars collided at a corner nine miles northeast of Washington on Riverside road. Davis had a broken rib. Mrs. George Hora was uninjured but shaken, both cars badly damaged.
Washington’s Y M C A volleyball team won a triangular meet at Davenport defeating Davenport RB and Burlington in two straight games each. Starting lineup included Ray Whitehead Roy Finch Tom Cantoni Henry Little Walt Kiesey Leo Hoover Stan Kiesey and Jim Causey. Dr A W Clow coached the team.
Two steamers raced to assist the British freighter Kenilworth after a second plea for help. The Kenilworth was carrying ore to Shanghai when trouble struck. Details remain scarce as rescue efforts continue today.
Miss Agnes Samuelson state superintendent of public instruction will address the Washington high school Friday at eight. A 7:30 pre address demonstration program and a 4:30 dinner at the Y M C A accompany the observance. Ralph LeMoine leads plans with invitations to education officials and local lawmakers.

Des Moines reports heavy toll on the Grand Army of the Republic with 14 posts and 104 members left nationwide from 33,000 in 1878. Between Jan 1 and Nov 1, 48 Lincoln era veterans died, 14 of 28 posts active in 1986 have been abandoned, leaving Des Moines with two posts and 66 members in the post at large.

Sheriff plans to leave for St. Louis to return Ira Caldwell, wanted in this county on desertion of his family. Caldwell was arrested there by St. Louis police and had been living under an assumed name, according to the sheriff.

Fifteen Washington high school boys will travel Friday morning to Davenport for a boys conference that runs through Saturday evening. Accompanying them are Harold Williams of the faculty and Leigh Soule of the Y M C A. Secretary Wallace told the corn belt conference in Indianapolis that corn alcohol cannot become a large motor fuel market for five to six years. He cited expected subsidies or heavy taxes as barriers and noted strong opposition from petroleum and auto interests. He predicted coal, wood, shale or molasses could prove cheaper if petroleum is scarce.
