Larry Bartlett was named president of the Chamber of Commerce board in Washington at a Chamber office meeting this week. Merrill Mason is the vice-president for the coming year and Bob Burt will serve as treasurer.
Lincoln Elementary School in Washington will celebrate American Education Week with an open house from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Patrons may inspect machines and view video taped class demonstrations. Stewart School also hosts an open house Monday Nov 14 from 7 to 9 p.m. with the theme A Day at Stewart School. Kathy Kishel Stewart librarian organized video programs including each class art and music activities viewed on three TV sets. The public is invited.
Mary Gale Letts will present a book review on Tuesday November 14 at 1 30 p m at the Washington Public Library. She reviews The Seven Days of Creation by Vladimir Maximov as part of National Book Week running November 14 through 19 with public attendance encouraged.

The county hospital board moved to challenge federal HEW cost containment rules seen as risking Washington County Hospital and other small rural facilities. Normalcy returns as northwest Iowa cleans up from a five inch snowfall that shut roads and forced school and business closures. Interstate 29 remained blocked with stranded motorists while more than 200 people were sheltered in motels and schools. Seven babies were born during the height of the storm at St. Luke's Medical Center and one couple walked home through the blizzard after their car stalled.
