Gunman robs Younkers in Iowa City for $500
A man armed with a submachine gun robbed the Younkers Department Store in Iowa City of about $500 shortly before 9 p.m. He and manager David Zelinsky confronted the cashier and escaped unseen. The gunman, around 30, 5 feet 10 inches, wore a green hat and black overcoat.

Keokuk man dies in Fort Madison highway crash
A Keokuk man Timothy Michael Boyle, 29, died when his car slid on wet pavement and struck a semi driven by Warren Walcott of Allendale Michigan near Fort Madison. The crash, in drizzle, increased Iowa traffic fatalities to 686 for the year. A second fatality was Myron King, 73, of Sheridan Missouri, who died in a Creston hospital from injuries from a prior two car crash near Thayer. King’s son Albert, 45, was not injured. the other driver John Shhrimplin of Lawrence Kansas was hospitalized and later released.
