Pasadena scientists race to reanimate Surveyor 5 while Surveyor 6 rests on the moon. The two probes may establish simultaneous communications, with Surveyor 6 delivering about 300 high quality pictures showing a rough cratered surface.
The Viet Cong freed two American sergeants James Jackson Jr and Daniel Lee Pitzer. A third prisoner Edward R Johnson is ill and to be released after medical treatment. The releases were announced at a NLF news conference with American peace leader Thomas Hayden.
In Paris the National Assembly narrowly approved France’s 1968 budget by 252 to 234, with Gaullists holding a slim majority. President de Gaulle warned dissolution if rejected, while Pompidou urged passage to boost the economy amid heated opposition. The bill now goes to the Senate before a final reading.
President Johnson lauded veterans returning from Vietnam as he toured military sites from Fort Benning to El Toro and spent a night aboard the USS Enterprise while calling for national unity to end hostilities. The two day trip started Friday with visits to Ft Benning and the Marine air station before the sea assignment.
Partly cloudy conditions are noted in Iowa with cooler readings in the east and south tonight. Across the nation, the president denounces war critics as prolonging the conflict while praising servicemen, vowing support, rebuilding schools and homes, and urging unity at military installations.

The VFW boycott cited new burial rules. Marines celebrate 192nd birthday as Ignatius lauds Vietnam era valor. 31,093 Marines fallen in all wars, with 5,083 in Vietnam.
In a two day Teamsters strike threat motorists jammed stations across eight counties while others shifted to public transport. Negotiations between 11 locals and industry were to resume after a brief Friday session. CTA planned schedule changes and school buses risked cancellation if talks falter by Monday.
At Land Park Zoo in Sacramento a 15 month old Indian elephant named GOP met Gov Ronald Reagan's nine year old son Skipper. The elephant stepped on Skipper's toe during the greeting as the pair began their unusual first family encounter in California.
UPI reports American paratroopers of the 173rd Airborne Brigade repelled another North Vietnamese assault during the Dak To fighting in the Central Highlands. Hill 724 fighting continued with the 4th Division as North Vietnamese casualties rose to at least 414 overall. A rescue by U S cavalry followed an attack on engineers, with five Americans killed, seven wounded, and 13 Communists killed or captured.
Three men were fatally shot at Cypress Gardens Lounge in Queens by a stocky gunman wearing a gray hat and black coat. The victims were James and Thomas D Angelo and Frank Terelli, all with criminal backgrounds. The killer fled after a 20 to 25 round burst from a .45 caliber submachine gun. Police describe the shooting as a professional job and seek the suspect, thought to be 45 to 50 years old. James D Angelo’s son furious at reporters and a photographer was attacked as authorities processed the scene. The victims lived in New York City and Long Island, with James arriving just before the attack.
DETROIT UPI The United Auto Workers National Chrysler Council meets today and is expected to endorse the new three year contract with Chrysler Corp The company is recovering from crippling local strikes and 37 000 workers are idled but settlements give hope production will be normal next week The pact covers 95 000 production and maintenance workers and raises pay and benefits by over 2 per hour over three years including alignment with Canadian workers The International Executive Board approved the pace setting contract and recommends council ratification by members next week
Five people from Cahokia were killed in a head on collision at the Illinois 3 and Jerome Lane intersection Friday night. The dead were John H. Lentz 31 single occupant of one car and Paul Goforth 20 Kathy Meyer 17 Georgia Cates 16 Roy Mitchell 19 passengers in the other car. Bermil Swift 21 driver of the second car was in critical condition at St Marys Hospital East St. Louis. Police said Swift lost control and crossed into the opposite lane.
