New fertilizer plant set for Slater Iowa by Sinclair unit
Sinclair Petrochemicals Inc will build a four acre blending and distribution facility on Iowa 210 near Slater to supply mid Iowa. Operational in January, the plant will blend up to 40 tons of high analysis fertilizer per hour with five sales points handling dry fertilizer and anhydrous ammonia. An Iowa built radiation detector is aboard a Mariner Mars rocket that failed to jettison its protective shroud, preventing experiments from operating. A duplicate Iowa detector will ride a follow up Mariner if the next launch succeeds, to study magnetically trapped radiation around Mars and interplanetary radiation during the 350 million mile flight expected to take about eight and a half months. Iowa scientists noted detectors measured far less radiation than expected, and traced the malfunction to the shroud failure.
