Poisoning case targets Whiteman's former wife in San Francisco

Police issued a warrant for William W. Cootes Jr. 30 for alleged poisoning of Mrs. Vanda Hoff Unger a former wife of bandleader Paul Whiteman. She was treated after carbon tetrachloride was found in her coffee Aug 6. Cootes previously served as her estate conservator and fled. FBI also charged unlawful flight.

Veterans Day speakers named for five Washington schools

The VFW and Auxiliary announce five Washington schools will host Veterans Day observances with speakers including Ira Morrison at the junior high, Rev. Richard Peterson at the high school, Nels Westermark at Lincoln, Rev. James Grubb at Stewart, all coordinated by Auxiliary President Mrs Worley and Post members with Superintendent John Phleg er and Sister Mary John Ann. Iowa Southern crew also installs equipment to prevent electrolysis in the gas main on the east side square today to extend its life.

Nancy Osincup Wins District RAVE Title

Nancy Osincup daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Osincup of Washington won the district 7 RAVE contest Rural Amateur Variety Entertainment sponsored by the Farm Bureau Women at Mt Pleasant Nov 7. She was one of 11 contestants representing Washington County and now a Drake University junior. Osincup will represent district 7 at the state contest in Des Moines Nov 16 17 during the Iowa Farm Bureau State Convention. The RAVE contest will be at 9 30 a m Nov 17 in the Veterans Auditorium after the pancake breakfast.

A Marshalltown fire killed 11 month old David Phillips and suffocated 3 year old Jimmy Laughlin while six children were left alone in the home. John Clyde Huston 86 of Crawfordsville died Sunday November 8 1964 when his car left a blacktop road near Columbus City plunged into a ditch. Washington County Conservation Board meeting notices

The Washington County Conservation Board will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the Horse Feed and Grain Office. The meetings are open to the public. The 1964 Christmas stamps go on sale at the Washington post office Tuesday per postmaster Harry Levy. An adequate supply has been purchased and buyers are urged to get stamps early.

Two injured in weekend accidents in Iowa County

Two Washington County residents were hospitalized at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after auto crashes Saturday. Bernard Paul Kron of Riverside was struck by Jesse Havel and sustained head injuries while checking a derelict pickup on a county road. Carla Jean Eckrist of Iowa City, living in Wellman, lost control on Highway 8 and was thrown from the vehicle, then taken to Mercy Hospital in Iowa City in critical condition.
