Howard Cook 55 of Bloomfield was killed in a tractor overturning accident on his farm south of town. His daughter Mrs Ray Wardlow who lived with him investigated after the tractor stopped. He is survived by two other daughters.
Iowa state guard plans evacuating Eldora training school for boys with 67 inmates moved to Anamosa reformator y quarters after mass riot outbreaks. Guards escorted the convicts 130 miles by state patrol, with some vehicles needed to replace a broken lead truck.
Russell Bull of Fort Dodge testifies in Mason City that J. G. Morse owner of Morse Produce Co fired a revolver at pickets outside the plant to scare strikers. Both Morse and city detective James Buchanan admit firing the weapon to intimidate demonstrators.
Mrs Otto Rogge 47 died from injuries after a car carrying eight people overturned in a ditch on a highway shoulder. The vehicle was driven by her daughter in law Mrs Glenn Harris of Atlantic. Mrs Lloyd Harris also sustained injuries in the crash.
DES MOINES The armed forces discharged 25 805 Iowans in October nearly triple the September total. John H. Quigley of the veterans employment service announced the homeward flow of Iowa men and women from the army navy coast guard and marines. November releases may equal or surpass October with about 5000 discharged in the first seven days suggesting 30000 or more for the month.
Joseph A. Gunpic, 42, of Chicago, president of Alumicast Metal Stamping Co., was killed when the four place rented plane crashed in timberland about 20 miles northwest of Dubuque after a stop in Dubuque on a trip to Waterloo. Pilot was off course. farmer Charles Cook vicinity witness.
The five man U S Army commission halted Gen Tomoyuki Yama shita trial after a defense charge of scandalous misinterpretation of testimony and a demand for another interpreter. The panel ruled the interpreter charges unwarranted and ordered two interpreters to work jointly. An evening session will review witness testimony and alleged provincial atrocities. Capt Milton Sonberg of Key Port pressed the misinterpretation claim.
Two long range patrol seaplanes collided off Spoil Island in Corpus Christi Bay at 8:96 p m. Two hundred feet above the water one craft tried to land while the other was taking off. Six survivors were found but later one died in a naval hospital. Names of personnel withheld pending kin notification. Rescue and salvage boats and flares aided the search.
The Washington county AAA office will be closed Monday November 12 for Armistice Day and Tuesday November 13 so staff can attend a dismvet meeting in Ottumwa.
A witness in Clayton county reported seeing a plane circle as if seeking a landing spot five miles east of Holy Cross. The engine then sputtered and stopped, and the aircraft crashed, sparking an emergency response.
It is the final day to renew chauffeurs licenses for the coming year. An examiner and two clerks will be available Fridays in November and December to issue renewals and conduct license tests. The truck driver renewal fee is two dollars and must be completed by December 31 with no extensions. Returning service members should bring their last license prior to going to war. the six month post discharge rule does not apply to chauffeur licenses. About 1,000 licenses for truck drivers are expected in Washington County.
The 1945 census reports Washington county farmland at 51,710 acres up from 42,138 in 1940, while the county’s farm total shrank to 2,259 from 2,266. Across Iowa the trend shows fewer farms but more land per farm, with Muscatine gaining over 17,000 acres and Monona losing more than 8,000.
In Chungking a communist radio appealed to President Truman to end American intervention in the Chinese civil war and withdraw forces. Gen Wedemeyer ordered Marine Gen Rockey to probe charges that Marines fought with Nationalists north of China. Fighting reportedly rages near Shanhaigwan with over 2,000 Marines deployed nearby. Wedemeyer said only three Marines were wounded in clashes not instigated by U.S. troops.
British forces moved into Soerabaja to back an ultimatum demanding unconditional surrender from Indonesian extremists. The 6 p.m. deadline passed without reply as troops reinforced the port and air bases while Indonesian defenders were driven off the perimeter. The ultimatum called for hostages to be returned arms surrendered and leaders arrested with civilians allowed to depart if desired.
River Products sues Kilsworth F Kelley in district court claiming delivery of agricultural lime and road stone from Dec 3 1942 to Apr 10 1945 totaling 2292 68 with a balance due of 643 77 and seeks judgment for 655 77 including interest. Emil G Trott of Iowa City represents the plaintiff.

Washington November 9 UP The labor management conference navigated collective bargaining shoals besting a WWI era parley. Secretary George W. Taylor said six committees fully endorse collective bargaining principles and report progress. Some move toward bedrock specifics despite past resistance.
Mrs. Harriet Coulter, treasurer, reports $95.55 in contributions this week to the national war fund for the county. Donations include $55.55 from Union district in Cedar township, $25 in miscellaneous gifts, and $15 from Pleasant Hill district southeast of Washington. Total contributions reach about $13,700 with an expected final near $14,000. several rural school districts have not yet reported. Money can be left with Mrs. Coulter at the courthouse.
Announced closure of the internal revenue office at the post office next Monday in observance of Armistice Day.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars announce the 25th Buddy Poppy sale in Washington on Saturday November 10. Proceeds go to disabled and needy veterans and their dependents. Headquarters are at Scott Furniture on the north side of the square.
