Washington High School announces an open house during American Education Week on Tuesday November 9 from 7 to 9 p.m. Teachers will be available for conferences with parents and a 7 30 p.m. slide presentation will be shown in room 201.
Overnight into Sunday the mercury fell to the teens in the Washington area with several residents reporting as low as 14 degrees. Skies cleared by afternoon but temperatures rose slowly, keeping the chill.
Ainsworth Lions Club members will canvass the community after a 7:30 p.m. meeting at the American Legion Hall on Wednesday November 10. They will sell light bulbs and distribute eye donor cards to area residents.
The Washington Community School District board will meet Wednesday at 7 30 p m in the administration building on West Main. The tentative agenda includes evaluating attendance improvements at the high school and discussing the new Student Personnel Services post by Jim Rossen.
A major explosion at the Phillips Petroleum refinery in the Fairfax District occurred around 12:15 a.m. triggering a fire visible up to 15 miles away. No injuries were reported.
In Davenport Iowa police investigated the fatal shooting of Carol Masias 34 found in her apartment closet. She was shot once in the head between noon and 1 p.m. Sunday. Two .38 caliber pistols were found. Elmer Flesher 49 shared the apartment and discovered the body about three hours later. No suspects in custody.
The Washington High School presents Jabberwock a comedy by Jamie Thurber about a Columbus Ohio family where talking house paintings and electric misadventures unfold. Jamie loves the girl but secrecy haunts him as Grandpa clues linger from the Civil War era. Tickets 150 adults 75 student seats at McDaniel Drug Store.
Des Moines reports show Iowa farmland from October 1975 to October 1976 rose about 30 percent on average, based on a survey of around 200 rural banks. Per acre values ranged from 500 to 3250 dollars, with 90 percent of good land valued between 750 and 2250 dollars. Only Illinois rose faster among five states, at 42 percent.
The Old Brick Associates must close by November 23 on a 9950 dollar bid to buy First Presbyterian Church’s 120 year old home in Iowa City. They need a 70000 dollar loan and regents’ approval to seal the land sale under the campus lease. The congregation voted 179 to 2 to accept the offer after halting negotiations last July and planning demolition.
United Press International reports that striking UAW locals at Deere and Co. plants in Ottumwa and Dubuque ratified a new contract by an overwhelming margin. Nearly 7,000 of Iowa's 18,000 UAW Deere workers belong to the two locals.
Widespread earthquakes rocked southwest China the Philippines and Japan with magnitudes up to 6.8. Officials reported casualties in Iran and Greece while warning of possible tidal waves. Philippine authorities mobilized disaster centers as Surigao provinces reported heavy damage and communication outages.
Israel won a key victory to end its second class status at UNESCO and US Senator Dick Clark urged a full American financial return to the organization. The vote moved Israel to the European region, with Western nations backing the move while the Soviet bloc abstained and Arab states stayed away.
Authorities issued felony warrants for Vicki Caniglia and Randy Scott, seeking a Nebraska plated pickup linked to a mass shooting at The Garage bar in Council Bluffs. Eight people were wounded as four shotgun blasts shattered an open door with 150 to 180 patrons inside. one victim, Jim Henderson, remained in serious condition. Witnesses described a sudden volley of pellets causing panic among the crowds. No motive is known.
More than 100 large city mayors met in Chicago with the UPI report noting the aim to craft a priority list for urban problems to present to President-elect Carter. Newark Mayor Kenneth Gibson led the discussion as the group sought federal housing support and unemployment funds while stressing collaboration over new grants.
A U S District Court jury acquitted former Democratic state senator James Schaben of illegally transporting disease exposed cattle across state lines. Schaben, a Dunlap livestock auctioneer and 1974 gubernatorial candidate, faced misdemeanor charges after being indicted earlier this year by a federal grand jury.

More than 3,000 public school bus drivers in Iowa have been trained in a mobile laboratory used by the Iowa Department of Public Instruction. The 21 hour course combines classroom and driving simulations to improve safety, with DPI hoping for legislation at the upcoming General Assembly.
