Rock Island Railroad says it spent about 6 million dollars on third quarter rehabilitation, four times as much as a year earlier, and plans to report depreciation accounting for track structures in Q4. Net income after excluding rehab costs would show a positive result, while overall nine month losses narrowed from last year. The company remains in bankruptcy since March 1975.

Malone Couple Die In Fire After Rear-Ended Collision
Three people were killed when an auto driven by Malone residents Donald Day and Lorraine Day exploded and burned after being struck from behind by a car driven by Richard Rockhill of Bridgewater Massachusetts. Passenger Herbert Recore of North Bangor also died. Rockhill, hospitalized, was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Agreement reached to end Deere strike in six states
About 27,000 United Auto Workers are expected to return to Deere plants and centers in Illinois Iowa Atlanta Memphis Minneapolis and Denver after a tentative contract was reached. Workers will vote on the pact Sunday and Monday amid improved wage cost of living pension dental and eye care provisions. The strike affected Deere facilities across the region and could influence contracts at Caterpillar and International Harvester as well.

Iowan cancer survivor aims to help dying people

Harkin narrowly defeats Carter in Iowa race across counties
In Story County Carter trailed with 43.4 percent as Harkin won 74.2 percent. Pottawattamie showed a similar split with Carter 45.7 percent and Harkin 55.9 percent. A UPI survey had forecast Carter would carry one GOP-leaning county where he fell short, with Carter 1,805 to Ford 1,802.
