Iowa producers may see a drop of about 100000 in the value of the states annual fur crop this season. The last trapping season yielded 615688 to farmers and trappers as drought reduced muskrat and mink numbers across streams and lakes. Northern Iowa remains open for muskrat trapping, unlike 1933 34 when the south was open.
J. M. Vahle 34 of Gladstone Newfoundland was killed at lock 18 north Burlington when he touched an electrical socket in water. His death is the third fatality since the waterway project began following earlier deaths of Dale Darrah and a drowning incident months ago.
Grinnell beer taverns will stay open after midnight as the city council decided. A proposed ordinance to close at midnight failed on its first reading.
Two new scarlet fever cases at the Civilian Conservation Corps camp bring total to fourteen. Quarantine, first lifted, was reinstated three days ago and extended again Tuesday.
Kemp of Muscatine faced drought and chinch bugs cutting July oats. Heavy rains revived stalks to 5 20 inches with heads maturing before frost. He now expects a 30 bushels per acre threshing yield this week illustrating a late harvest payoff.
Leon R. Vesely recuperates in a plaster cast after a 24 foot fall at the Penick and Fore plant in Cedar Rapids. He landed on a basement floor and sustained a back injury while on the job.
Addie Jones 70 of Montezuma died after a bull attack at Alvin Mann farm near Malcolm last Thursday. Jones was tending cows when the enraged animal charged. Mann searched for her finding her on the ground, semiconscious and being trampled.
Bids for carrying star mail route No. 43,177 from Muscatine to Washington and return, six times weekly, are due before 4:30 p.m. January 18. The route, passing Fruitland Letts Columbus Junction Cotter Ainsworth, covers 89.46 miles. Operations start on receipt of mail from the 9.20 a.m. train. return by 1 hour after. Salary $1,145 with $1,400 bond.
Judge Frank Beehly presided as a seven member grand jury was drawn for the November term. Foreman William F. Miller and jurors from Washington West Chester Nira Riverside Richmond Ainsworth were named. Jury and non jury trial assignments were announced with dates for trials starting mid November and a long list of cases to be heard before the term ends.
The Journal thanks J. A. Jones for the use of the public address system and A. J. Franzen for furnishing a general fee for the radio. The paper received precinct reports across the county as counts were completed and, via United Press and radio, announced returns from across the United States.
Olds OLDS Nov 2 Anderson Hardware store broken into during Halloween. merchandise valued around $35 taken plus $5 in pennies. Suspected local involvement with items including 21 jackknives and an old gun kept as a keepsake.
Keokuk presbytery young people gathered at the Ainsworth United Presbyterian church for their fall rally. Seated at long tables for a multi course dinner, 115 attended as Dr. T H McMichael of Monmouth College spoke on Trees and the Christian life.
Eight American Legion posts will send drum and bugle corps to the University of Iowa for Armistice Day ceremonies and a competition before the Purdue Iowa football game. About 30 men per unit will parade at 10 30 a m and perform in the stadium between 1 and 2 p m to win a trophy from the Hawkeye athletic department. Notable officers from the Iowa Legion will lead the event with units from Davenport Independence Elkader Grinnell Muscatine Moline Rock Island and more. Judging will focus on cadence marching maneuvering drumming and bugle playing with Col George Dailey Dr O B Van Doren and Prof Charles B Righter serving on the panel.
Beverly Hills resident ill Rogers criticizes the post election field calling candidates varied but the same in action. He predicts the next Congress will be a pack of mongrels with Republicans and Democrats blended in new dealer and old customs.
The Y M C A marks its tenth year in Washington with the annual financial campaign on Tuesday November 26. About forty volunteers will start with a community breakfast then begin soliciting memberships and subscriptions in the newly opened association building that opened February 1, 1925.

Benblossom explained design points to groups as visitors viewed pieces in the Journal building northwest corner room upstairs. The exhibit runs 2 30 to 5 30 this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon from 2 30 to 5 30 and 7 to 9 30 tonight with hostesses from the Fortnightly Art department in charge.
Pierre Lavel, France's foreign minister, announced that he could not form a new cabinet as Premier Gaston Doumergue and other cabinet members resigned after constitutional reform plans were rejected.
The annual Red Cross roll call begins Thursday November 15 in Washington county. Mrs A K E Atchison roll call chairman announced the organized drive with many workers enlisted. The county quota is about 1000 members and many residents contribute a dollar for membership. Posters have been distributed and placed in store windows across the county.
James Griffin suffered a badly cut lip and multiple dental injuries with chest pains after a highway collision on the gravel road north of Wellman. His car hit a vehicle owned by H Kempf of Wellman driven by Ervin Kempf. the Wellman driver was uninjured. Both cars were heavily damaged and a derrick was needed to separate them.
A bandit gang seized Cambria Wisconsin firing on residents and attempting to blow open the bank safe. A telephone operator raised the alarm drawing a crowd. three explosive charges failed to crack the safe and the robbers fled.
Rev. C. KE. Strong and family move to 607 South Iowa Avenue to serve the Prairie Flower Baptist Church northwest of Washington. He has preached there for several weeks and arrives with daughters Marjorie a high school senior and Carolyn in seventh grade, coming from Hillsboro in Henry County.
Mrs Thomas Waltman died at her Riverside home from a complication of diseases after a long illness. Born Julian Ann Gipple in Grandview Iowa on September 18 1864 she married Thomas L Waltman over fifty seven years ago. They lived in Fredonia Missouri and Davenport before moving to Riverside thirteen years ago. Survived by her husband two daughters and four sons two brothers and nineteen grandchildren. Funeral at 2 pm Thursday at the Fredonia Methodist church following a 12 30 service at home. Burial Cedar Bethel cemetery Fredonia.
Washington merchants plan to stay open all day Monday Armistice Day this year while not imposing a formal shutdown. The Sunday holiday prompts varied closing plans but prevailing sentiment favors keeping stores open with no concerted action planned.
A United Press survey shows many freshly elected Democratic lawmakers favor inflationary policies and a two billion dollar veterans bonus. The survey notes two to one support for the bonus among Democratic senators, with 118 inflationist House members and 178 favoring the greenback payout. The administration appears to retain a 309 member House and a two thirds Senate majority.
Complete Democratic control of Iowa's executive, legislative, and judicial branches was secured after Tuesday's election. Governor Herring and other Democratic candidates led with a projected statewide vote over 875,000, a margin around 75,000. The House tally shows Democrats up but short of a net gain due to incomplete returns, while the Senate now leans Democratic with at least three gained seats, creating a clear majority.
A dynamite timed starter kicked off the national husking contest in Fairmont Minnesota with 18 top huskers from nine states competing on two farms. Iowa entrants include Lee Stodgell of Morning Sun and Walter Johansen of Audubon.
