Old Washington landfill sells for 64500 at auction
The City of Washington sold its 43 acre landfill site two miles south of the city for 64500 to Hanson Concrete Co at 1500 per acre. City officials called the price incredible and will use the funds to offset about 45000 in earth moving and closing costs from phasing out the site last September. The landfill closed after SEMCO regional facility near Richland opened.

A one car crash south of Washington hospitalized a rural Wayland woman Wednesday night Eva M Rebo 39 was taken to Washington County Hospital and later transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City after the car she was driving went off county road W55 about 12 miles south of here Authorities said Deputy Sheriff John Combs said Ms Rebo who was alone in her car apparently went to sleep at the wheel as she headed north on W47 Her car ran the stop sign at the junction of the two roads went across W S5 crashed through a fence and came to rest in a farm field The mishap occurred at about 9 35 p m Property damage was set at 361.
