Steele to lead Washington Chamber in 1976

Bill Steele will head the Washington Chamber of Commerce in 1976. Steele owns Steele Lumber Co and was elected president of the board this week. Walter Jarrell Jr. of Farrell Printing & Office Supplies was chosen vice president and Kent Dallmeyer of the National Bank elected treasurer for the new year.

Washington Community Chest reaches halfway to goal

Campaign chairman Jim Kauffman said donations and pledges total $21,675, 51 percent of the $42,500 target. The drive shifts to residential areas as door canvassing begins, with appeals also wrapping up in business and industrial sectors. Donations may be mailed to Box 86, Washington.

Waco High Drama to Stage A Widow's Weary-or-Virtue Wins Out

Waco High School's drama department presents the melodrama A Widow's Weary-or-Virtue Wins Out this Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Olds gymnasium. The cast includes Terry Vigil as the villain Doug Swanson Peg Lindeen as henchman and widow Karla Gibson as widow and Telitha Bean as grandmother. Dan Widmer plays the heroine with Kim Fort as miner Rick Miller as dance hall girl and Sara Swartzendruber on piano. The story follows an unscrupulous villain attempting to steal a silver mine home and the widow's daughter. tickets can be reserved by calling the school.

Sheriff to acquire two Pontiacs for county patrols

Washington County Deputy sheriffs will soon drive two new Pontiac Catalina patrol cars, ordered from Perdock Inc. of Washington as the lowest of three bids at 6692 for both cars. The sheriff noted the cars replace high mileage units and will be white with yellow and blue markings. A new jail visiting hour was added, 7 to 8 p.m. Saturdays, to accommodate working visitors, alongside existing 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and 2 to 3 p.m. Thursdays sessions.

Hatfields and McCoys plan historic reunion and monument

BLACKBERRY FORK Ky UPI says the Hatfield and McCoy clans will end their feud with a public reunion. Randall McCoy kin will install an $8000 granite monument from Hatfield Monument Co. at the burial site of five ancestors. Expose drug bonuses in CIA experiments at Lexington center

Former Kentucky drug rehabilitation center inmates testified before a Senate subcommittee that they were given hard drugs as bonuses for participating in CIA and Navy backed experiments in the 1950s. They described a program funded to replace opium supplies, with subjects earning “banked” morphine and LSD, while officials debated ethics and subject rights.

Book professor on drug charge in Iowa City case

Seven people including University of Iowa psychology professor Stephen Fox and local attorney Jane Fox were arraigned on charges of intoxication driving receiving stolen property and drug possession. Others named include Betty Ebert Michael Matyka and William Corrado as investigators recovered LSD marijuana barbiturates amphetamines and heroin at a residence following a Coralville burglary.

Balmy weather may linger as Iowa enjoys warm spell

United Press International notes a long stretch of unseasonably warm autumn weather in Iowa with high 60s to mid 70s and blooming marigolds and petunias. Meteorologist Warren Caldwell says the spell is borrowed time, warning November can bring abrupt cold and snow, citing past Iowa snowfalls in 1960s and early 1970s.

Ford unharmed after boy's flag staff strike at Mass arrival

President Ford, undaunted and uninjured, continued handshakes upon arrival in Springfield Massachusetts after a boy raised a 24 inch flag staff struck his temple. Secret Service quickly stopped the stick as Ford resumed greeting crowds before addressing editors.
