Navy Crusader Shot Down Near Hanoi Amid Viet Cong Attacks
A U S Navy F-8 Crusader was shot down 35 miles east of Hanoi during a raid on a railroad bridge. The pilot parachuted into a dense, heavily defended area and is believed captured. Other strikes hit a Bach Long Island radar site and the Hai Duong bridge. In Pleiku Province, 79 Viet Cong bodies were found after clashes with the 1st Cavalry Division. U S 1st Infantry Division forces reported five enemy killed and 25 tunnels destroyed 20 miles northeast of Saigon. Casualties to Americans were light. A deer lull followed heavy losses in the Pleiku area, while North Vietnamese troops reportedly sought surrender after heavy fighting at Plei Me. An American intelligence officer described captured Viet Cong as sick and demoralized. A government spokesman reported Maj. Nguyen Van Dan jailed for killing his wife, the Tiger Lady of the Mekong Delta.

Plane crash in Iowa kills two occupants near Council Bluffs
A single engine plane nose dived into a cornfield about one mile southeast of Council Bluffs, killing a man and a woman presumed residents of the area. Deputies Pace and Danford investigated. The crash occurred near Neilsen Nursery and Landscaping Co. Witness Bert Reed reported the plane circling before it struck the ground. Both occupants were still strapped in their seats at the scene. The owner noted the pattern suggested an attempted approach to the airport. Also, Washington County jurors with no excuses are to report at 9 a.m. on Monday November 22, not November 8.
