Des Moines physicians report Martin OConnor 14 son of Attorney General Edward OConnor remains critical after appendicitis. OConnor halted reelection campaign duties to tend to his son and returned home last week. A blood transfusion and a third operation were performed Saturday.
The First Trust and Savings bank, successor to the Iowa State Savings bank of Cedar Rapids, opened for business today under Senate File 111. An initial payment of 45 percent of the frozen deposits will be made through the new bank, totaling about 600 dollars per depositor.
Dubuque life remains bright for John Hillard as he celebrates his 103rd birthday, the oldest man in Dubuque county. He enjoys a strong appetite, rarely falls ill, and has never worn glasses, according to his physician. Hillard, born in Alsace Lorraine, has lived in the United States since his early manhood.
Davenport honored John C. Witt 58 chairman of the Scott County Democratic Central Committee and Iowa president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles after his death at home. Witt chaired party activities and was a noted civic figure in pre election days.
Five CCC camp youths from Cresco were en route home to New Hampton and Nashua when their car stalled near Charles City Illinois Central depot. Monoxide gas exposure sent two to a physician. they recovered and completed their trip later that day.
Ex convict Henry A. Watson bound over to the federal grand jury in Keokuk after federal agents seized a counterfeiting setup and bootleg still in his Ft. Madison possession. Investigators found two moulds for 25 and 10 cent pieces and several finished 25 cent counterfeits.
Des Moines reports from Ft Madison penitentiary and Anamosa penitentiary show 118 prisoners were released in October. Sixty nine gained their freedom through paroles, forty were released by sentence expiration, and six by court order.
Keokuk police charged John Eads 47 with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene after his auto parked across the highway without lights. His wife Jane was held for intoxication. Roy Smith and Harold Tyauerheimer collided with the unlit car, while Charles Pond and Oscar Eland also crashed near the wreckage.
No trace has been found of Paul J. Edwards, son of Dr James F. Edwards, as authorities continue search efforts with no leads to his whereabouts.
Early returns from Washington county indicate a near complete Republican victory with two supervisor seats decided while one remains contested. Harold Putnam won sheriff with 4807 to 2512, Ethel Grecian reelected auditor 4559 to 208, and Marion George topped Charles Jackson 4189 to 2829 for treasurer amid a county wide tally not yet including Dutch Creek.

Weather mostly fair with some rain along the coast and mist in the Rockies.

J. J. Hughes, Iowa director of the nation emergency council, was notified from Washington that he will supervise all federal emergency operations in Iowa. He also serves as liaison between federal agencies and state emergency programs.
Voters showed continued interest in campaign issues at a city hall rally Monday evening. Mrs. A R Miller secretary of state and E G Eicher congressman from Washington spoke to a packed room. The event followed a torch light procession led by the Washington Concert band.
New York November 7 A steady streaming of Democratic voters early indicated a two thirds Senate majority for the New Deal and the Democrats would retain most of their large House edge Republican gains appeared limited. Early returns showed several Senate contests decisive with Fess defeated in Ohio and Reed trailing in Pennsylvania while Republicans trimmed the Democratic majority in the House likely by about 25 seats.
Merriam widens lead over Sinclair as returns come in with 6,180 of 10,271 precincts reporting. Merriam 562,142 Sinclair 459,408 Haight 132,741. Sinclair backers claim Los Angeles county robbed him of 125,000 votes.

Early returns suggested Congressman Edward C. Eicher of Washington was re-elected by at least 5,000 votes over Republican rival EK. R. Hicklin. Claire Dewey a Republican of Washington wins the Washeton Henry district seat against Howard A Baxter. Dewey leads by about 1 000 votes in Washington county with 3898 to 2833 and Dutch Creek township missing. Dewey's margin may shrink when Dutch Creek reports arrive. preliminary totals show nine precincts giving him a 90 vote advantage in the county and he is expected to win Henry county by roughly 300.
In Moline, voters backed the New Deal as Clyde Herring won re election by a substantial margin exceeding 53 000. Democrats carried the sixth district defeating C C Dowell while losing the third district A C Wilford fell to Gwynes. Governor Herrine led Turner 249 031 to 207 70 with the full state ticket appearing securely elected. Miller led Greenwalt for secretary of state 4 221 to 81 510 across 681 precincts.
Washington county hospital board delayed final action at its regular meeting on Monday afternoon on filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Margaret Hales Rose who left for Wichita Falls Texas to head a hospital. A committee will investigate applicants and make a recommendation before an election is held for the post. About sixty applications have been received.
Thieves broke into the Washington High School building overnight, breaking a window lock in the basement manual training room to access tools and a doll leading to the office. They rifled desks of Supt J H Peet Principal Della Patton and Secretary Elizabeth Irwin, took about 2 from a pencil machine and some candy from the Girl Reserves storage, leaving fingerprints for sheriff Daryl Mathers to study.

T K E Lee six year old president of the Armour packing company died at Presbyterian hospital after an operation for appendicitis. Lee was named president in 1931 and led the firm in Chicago news accounts.
A plane crash near Lebanon Indiana killed 16 year old Norman Cox and seriously injured 24 year old pilot Boyd Edington and 29 year old Loyal Endicott. The crash occurred in a corp field and left two others injured.
A hospital plans to upgrade with automatic electrically operated floors and improve X-ray equipment. A committee of board members and hospital doctors is collaborating to oversee the contemplated purchase and installation for enhanced patient care.
Kenton Kurtz reported his bicycle stolen by a Chicago youth who rode it to town on a freight train. The thief admitted the theft after a repair attempt at J and M shop. he was jailed briefly, then released when Kurtz chose not to prosecute. He planned to join the navy in California.
