Samuel Insull, worn by three days of cross examination, left the stand in Chicago after angrily denying he manipulated a 143 million dollar mail fraud. His attorney, Sam Howard, did not pursue cross examination.
A threatened relief laborers strike at the Midwest Packing Co. plant in Albia was averted after 175 relief workers voted not to strike. George Keller, chief engineer of the Town emergency relief administration, told plant officials no additional drought cattle would be furnished for processing.
Mrs. Helen M. Brewer former Mason City bus line owner was placed under a $2,500 bond to appear for questioning by internal revenue agents regarding an alleged $17,090 income tax due after selling the Ned Tall Transit line for $200,000 to the Jefferson Transportation Co. She spent the night in Ramsey County Jail after her arrest.
FE A Jewett of Waterloo was elected president of the Iowa State Teachers Association. He won 140 delegate votes while H W Banze and Charles H Tye trailed. Nominations for N D McCombs and Clay TD Slinker filled other top posts. A new registration total of 7 900 teachers was reported as delegates arrived.
Gold mining operations at Stone City Iowa near the Minnie Blank farm area are set to start in about three weeks. Emmett Peacock owner of a local hotel and theater says a 200 ton daily capacity is feasible with a flour gold system valued at $14000. He expects the project to recover gold from a large stretch of the Wapsipinicon river valley from Viola to Anamosa.
Harry W. Huttig president of Huttie Manufacturing faced four months in Cook county jail and a 2000 dollar fine on a conspiracy charge. His bill of ease options was filed and the case continued to January 2. A stay had expired November 1. The Muscatine man was convicted with four others of mortgaging real estate at excessive values and placing the mortgage into the Security Life Insurance Company of America portfolio.
Mrs Hal Ransom of Ionia retires after a 30 year career as a rural mail carrier on a 16 mile Republic route. She began November 4, 1904 earning $48 a month and is the first U S woman to complete a 30 year stretch in this role. Her husband served as substitute carrier on the same route.
Acting Captain William Warms of the steamship Morro Castle pleaded not guilty at a hearing after the Morro Castle fire at sea that killed 124 people.
Voters in Iowa will see sunshine and mild temperatures for Tuesday’s election. Federal meteorologist Charles Doe of Des Moines predicts fair weather today and tomorrow with no frost tonight and a high near 60 degrees tomorrow. Across the state rain was general Saturday with totals reaching 1.62 inches today in the local observer’s report.

The body of Henry Jones aged 80 who died Friday in DeWitt Arkansas was to be transported to Clay cemetery for burial in Fairfield. Services were set for 10 30 am. He was son of William and Eliza Jones early Clay township settlers. Survived by wife Cecilia Savage and son Harry with a daughter Cora Slattery in Fairfield and son Arch Jones in Canada. Sisters G P Judson of Fairfield Amy Johnson Alicia and Owen Hoskins Idaho. Brother Sam Jones in Clay. Henry left the town twenty five years ago for Canada then Arkansas.
